背景
1979年，Lucien Michel和 Marie Jose 婚後於教皇新堡產區成立了 Le Vieux Donjon (老教堂酒莊)。夫婦兩人都出身於釀酒家庭。酒莊佔地 15公頃，全部位於接近 Mont Redon和 Les Cabriere 附近的高原上，後者的土地上覆蓋著著名的“galetsroules”（足球大小的岩石）。酒莊中種有很多老藤葡萄樹，其中葡萄樹樹齡都超過了70年。自1990年，開始族種植了一公頃的克萊雷（Clairette）、瑚珊（Roussanne）和白歌海娜（Grenache Blanc），並且已經開始用釀制白教皇新堡葡萄酒。然而，紅葡萄酒才是老教堂酒莊真正的重點。葡萄園採用有機方式耕種，卻沒有特別去花費申請認證。另外，採收期比大多數教皇新堡酒莊晚很多，人手採收。釀製採用傳統工藝，部分葡萄被去梗，部分葡萄是單品獨立釀製，部分混釀。而且進行相對較長時間3星期左右的浸漬，然後在大木桶中培養18-20個月，不使用任何新橡木酒桶。老教堂酒莊是教皇新堡區內少有的幾家不經澄清和過濾直接裝瓶的酒莊之一。2008年，莊主女兒Claire，由美國頂級膜拜酒莊 Harlan Estate 實習後回來幫忙，並成為 Wine Spectator年度100大葡萄酒第8位。
酒莊的紅 Le Vieux Donjon 混調了75 % Grenache，10% Syrah 和 10% Mourvedre ，其餘部份混調了產區核准的葡萄品種。陳熟用上大橡木桶和混凝土缸，追隨教皇新堡的傳統釀法，成為了教堡區的一顆耀眼新星。

A ripe redcurrant, black cherry nose. Flamboyant and showy. Perhaps a little raw on the palate compared to the others but there is still great concentration. Dense blackcurrant, spice, black pepper and tar. This is very backward, a real vin de garde but it will be outstanding in 15-20 years.

A textbook Châteauneuf, the 2000 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape exhibits copious garrigue, rusty iron, earth and black cherry fruit on the nose. It’s showing solid complexity but there’s still fresh, ripe fruit. In the mouth, the wine is medium to full bodied with solid underlying structure, a superb texture and a long, quality finish. This should continue to drink well over the next 10 or more years.

Full deep red. Highly nuanced nose combines roasted, liqueur-like red fruits, smoke, truffle and spice cake; this reminded me of Vega Sicilia! Then silky but vinous and firm; a bit subdued today but boasts lovely fruit intensity and incipient complexity. Finishes long and subtle, with ripe, suave tannins and a late note of pepper. This should develop beautifully with bottle aging.

Beautiful, silky Châteauneuf terroir aromas: leather, game, truffles, plum, dried herbs, lead pencil. It all swirls around in the palate, a deeply satisfying blend that surprises and harks back to something as simple as a walk in the country on a rainy autumn day. Supple tannins on the balanced finish.
