Michel GROS estate located in Vosne-Romanée, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, finds its origins in 1830 when the first member of the GROS family settled there and founded his estate.
The following generations have continued to develop the estate’s plot, which currently covers an area of 23 hectares.
The flagship of the estate is Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru ‘Clos des Réas’, which has been operated as a monopoly by the GROS family since its acquisition in 1860.
Today, Pierre GROS (Domaine Michel GROS), 7th generation of this dynasty of winegrowers, continues and develops with the support of his father, Michel, the work undertaken by their ancestors.
Passionate but also very rigorous, Pierre takes constant care in the development of his wines, mastering all stages of production, from the vines to bottling.

Aux Brulees

This parcel is located next to the GROS family parcel of RICHEBOURG in the north. The draining capacity of the place may explain its name: the natural vegetation would be quickly "burned" during summer because of the dryness of the soil. The soil is very stony on a 30 to 35cm thickness, and the subsoil is made of hard limestone (similar to Prémeaux stones). This wine offers a great minerality; it is similar to Richebourg from which it is separated only by a 3m-wide lane. But the soil, which is not as thick as the Richebourg's, brings more softness to the tannins and makes it more rapidly accessible.

The 2012 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Brulees comes from vines that border the Richebourg owned by Michel’s brother Bernard (see Gros Frere & Soeur). It has quite a powerful, intense bouquet with black fruit, dark plum and touches of dried violet petals that shows impressive finesse. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy ripe, almost sinewy tannins that lend this premier cru very good weight. What it needs is a little more tension and terroir to filter through on the finish. Still, there is a lovely tingle of lemongrass on the aftertaste to be enjoyed: another fine Aux Brulees to add to many others this year.

An ultra-spicy if brooding nose is composed of fresh and ripe dark pinot, cassis, plum and sandalwood scents. This is also quite succulent with opulent medium-bodied flavors that possess an abundance of extract that buffers the moderately firm tannic spine on the mineral-infused finish that displays excellent length and simply terrific complexity. This very generous and fleshy effort should be approachable young.
