The chateau’s white stones peep through from behind the park and contrast with the glass of the greenhouse on the edge of the garden, a few paces away from the terrace. The eye lingers over the very classical lines of the chateau and the balanced composition of its setting between two clumps of vines. It was refurbished by Mark Kirwan at the end of the 18th century.
The arched windows above the central glass doors and its dormer windows soften the sharp slate roof slope and the uprightness of the high white shutters. The open pattern of the railing on the steps echoes these alternating curves and straight lines.
This is a proper family home. It exudes gentle symmetry with two flanking stone archways that are symbols of the owners’ hospitality. They open out to the estate and beyond.
The new cellar is a work of art conceived by Kinga and Anatoly Stolnikoff that contrasts pairings and disparities. Its monumental entrance features a sculpted steel arabesque entitled “Noah’s vine”. It leads to a modern, breathtakingly vast nave-like hall that towers above and joins the original buildings, housing the vathouse and cellars.
As you gradually get used to the soaring dimensions, you cannot fail to notice the strikingly horizontal lines of barrels and the contrastingly vertical metal pillars, which like trees, reach up and support the roof panels of this pagan temple, built to celebrate the craft of winemaking. In the vathouse, the thirty-seven tulip-shaped receptacles, made of lustreless concrete and designed to meet the requirements of each vineyard parcel, display fascinating sobriety. Their sensuous curves invite the eye to ogle.
Other pieces stand out in this emporium of technical equipment and materials that are there to ensure meticulous, natural and uniform vinification. These immense premises hold other lures for contemplation. The bright red of a canvas at the entrance catches the visitor’s eye, which then refocuses on the transparency and gilded detail of an antique mirror, while upstairs resides a scrupulously laid table.

The rich variety of forty-five different parcels always intrigues those who attempt to understand the fine web of subtlety that distinguishes great wines. The Merlot vines of the “Cabinet Ouest” parcel with its layered clay produce round, fleshy, balanced wines, while nearer the chateau the sun is dazzlingly reflected by surface gravel in the “Mois de juin” parcel in the middle of the estate, where the Cabernet Sauvignon ripens so well and delivers Kirwan’s velvety tannins.
In the distance the “Canon” plot can just be made out, perched at the highest point of the vineyard. Petit Verdot vines grow on this deep terrace of gravel and contribute their distinctive signature to Kirwan’s blends.
Chateau Kirwan 麒麟城堡
Château Kirwan 是莊園最好的以礫石和粘土為主體的園區產出的葡萄酒。果實採摘和兩次挑揀均採用手工完成,釀酒過程則以尊重每塊園區為準則。橡木桶用於十八個月的熟化工序,每年進行半數更新。
Charmes de Kirwan
