Puisseguin Saint Emilion

Puisseguin Saint Emilion is a Bordeaux wine appellation which lies at the heart of the "satellite" titles of the Saint-Emilion appellation in the "right bank" Libournais sub-region. The three other Saint Emilion satellites are Saint-Georges-Saint-Emilion, Montagne-Saint-Emilion and Lussac-Saint-Emilion. All four are located to the north of Saint-Emilion town.

Vineyards are planted on predominantly clay-limestone soils, with scattered patches of alluvial gravel. The substrate for the whole area is limestone and allows root systems to still find water in dry periods.

Of all the satellite appellations, Puisseguin-Saint-Emilion has the strictest laws regarding the production of wine. The original legal document drawn up for the AOC classification states the individual plots of land where the appellation's grapes must be grown. To qualify for the Puisseguin-Saint-Emilion appellation, grapes must come from vineyards planted to a density of less than 5500 vines per hectare (equivalent to around 2200 per acre). They must contain a minimum of 187 grams per liter of residual sugar. After fermentation (and chaptalization and concentration techniques), wines have to reach a minimum of 11 percent alcohol. As is the case for the other satellites, there are no Grand Cru classifications.
