Since its founding, Reichsrat von Buhl Winery has been known for its fine Rieslings from the best sites in the Mittelhaardt region. Before long, the Von Buhl name developed into a promise of quality.
At the official opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, it was a Von Buhl Riesling, at that time one of the most highly priced wines in the world, served for the customary toast. We are devoted to this legacy, and therefore we feel committed to continue shaping our history with both heart and devotion. Day after day. Day after day.
THE BEGINNING OF A LEGEND
The estate was founded in 1849 by Franz Peter Buhl (1809-1862) and was formed from the distribution of the original Jordan Estate into the three smaller estates; Geheimer Rat Dr. Von Bassermann-Jordan, Reichsrat von Buhl and Dr. Deinhard (today Weingut von Winning).
FRANZ ARMAND VON BUHL
The ownership of the winery passed to Franz Peter’s sons after his death in 1862 – son Franz Armand von Buhl took over the management of the winery. During his life, Armand von Buhl was considered one the most recognised authorities in all practical viticultural matters and was co-founder as well as vice president of the German Viticultural Association.
BEST QUALITY
After his untimely passing, Franz Eberhard’s widow Frieda Piper von Buhl takes over managment of the winery. She manages not only to maintain but actually increase the high quality that the estate was known for.
TIME FOR A GREAT SPARKLING WINE
The winery is leased to Japanese investors led by businessman Toyohiro Tokuoka. The winery is leased to Japanese investors led by businessman Toyohiro Tokuoka. During this time, a lot of money was invested in modernisation of the cellar and winery. The tenants spent many hours working on the winery and were soon able to reap the fruits of their labor and the steadily growing quality of the wines. In addition to increasing wine quality this was the beginning to pressing great sparkling wine.
ECOLOGICAL CERTIFICATION
In 2009, Reichsrat von Buhl’s vineyards and wines are organically certified.
ECOSTEP WINE CERTIFICATION
With the Ecostep wine certification we consider since June 2022 beside the climate and the environment after DIN ISO 14001, likewise the quality management after DIN ISO 9001, the work and health protection after DIN ISO 45001, as well as food security FSSC 22000 (one of the world-wide most important food security standards).
REICHSRAT VON BUHL –TRADITIONAL AND MODERN
Reichsrat von Buhl owns some of the best vineyards in the Mittelhaardt region, and we see this as an obligation to produce the best wines in every location. In our opinion, this is only possible when done in harmony with nature. For this reason, we have been working organically since 2006, combining the experience of over 170 years of viticulture with contemporary knowledge of ecology and sustainability.
AT THE TABLES OF THE MONARCHS
To celebrate Queen Mum 100th birthday, a 1989 Forster Ungeheuer Riesling Beerenauslese from Reichsrat von Buhl was served.
