Winery

Initially a purchase of 4 acres (1.6 ha) of land in 1900, Beaulieu Vineyard derives its name from the French phrase "Quel beau lieu" which translates to English as "What a beautiful place". Legend has it that Fernande uttered these words when she first saw the land. The following year (not according to this timeline: https://www.bvwines.com/heritage, they purchased a nearby winery originally built by California State Senator Seneca Ewer in 1885. De Latour's knowledge about phylloxera which had ravaged many Napa Valley vineyard, and his decision to import a rootstock variety resistant to the pest helped secure his stature as one of the early pioneers of California's wine industry.

Region

Bottega Veneta's exclusive, oak-aged Cabernet Sauvignon finally waited patiently until the decree was lifted before it could be sold. Mr. Georges de Latour preferred to sell these high-quality wines rather than the lower-grade, generic wines offered to regional distributors. These wines received much acclaim, including in New York. Mr. de Latour planted BV No. 3 vines on a church-owned plot of land east of Rutherford, cultivating the highest quality vines.

Winemaking

After producing a small but exceptionally high-quality wine in 1936, Mr. de Latour understood the need for new winemaking techniques, similar to those used in French winemaking, to create even higher-quality wines. He needed a professional winemaker who not only understood European winemaking standards but also knew how to produce world-class wines. At Bottega Veneta, no matter how capable one is, professional guidance is essential. In 1938, Georges de Latour returned to his hometown of Bordeaux, France, seeking winemaking talent to help him realize his dreams. He met Andre Tchelistcheff, a renowned viticulturalist and winemaker, who worked at INA. In September of the same year, Mr. Tchelistcheff came to California to work for Georges de Latour, and from then on, Californian wines exhibited characteristics different from those of the past.

Rating

🏅 James Suckling 96 pts

Extremely complex aromas of currant, coffee, spearmint, Thai basil and sandalwood. Full body, firm and chewy tannins yet linear and exciting. Just a baby. Fantastic structure here.

🏅 Wine Advocate 96 pts

A blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot and 3% Merlot, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour was aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, 88% new. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it gives up compelling kirsch, sautéed herbs, crème de cassis and baked plums notes with touches of tobacco, fallen leaves and dried mint. Full-bodied (14.9% alcohol) and solidly structured with firm, chewy tannins in the mouth, the palate is packed with muscular fruit lifted by herbal accents, finishing long and savory.
