Bunnahabhain was founded in 1881 in Port Askeg, Islay, and has changed hands only four times since its opening.
The distillery was founded by William Robertson and the Greenlay brothers, James and William, as Islay Distillers Company Ltd. The distillery itself was built on the northeast coast, along with a pier to serve it. This allowed supplies to arrive and the whisky to leave from this remote location. The distillery's water is drawn from the Magdalen Spring before flowing over the island's peat beds. This is one reason why Bunnahabhain whisky is less peaty than many Islay whiskies. In 1887, the Islay Distillers Company merged with William Grant & Co. During this period, it produced malt whisky for blending Scotch whisky.

Although located in Islay, a major center for peaty whisky, Bunnahabhain lacks strong smoky or medicinal notes because it uses almost peat-free malt (only about 3-5 ppm) and pure spring water from the hillside behind the distillery that hasn't flowed over peat layers.
By deliberately minimizing the influence of peat, its best-selling whiskies not only lack smoky peat notes but also lack a salty, sea-breezy flavor. Currently, the entire series is non-chill filtered, preserving more of the original whisky's character, allowing listeners to fully enjoy its rich and pleasing fruit aromas.

This whisky carries the smoky aroma of peaty malt, exuding a powerful flavor, a long finish, and the sweetness of sherry.
