When discussing the maturity of wine markets, Japan stands at the forefront in Asia. Local consumers are highly discerning—when buying wine, they don’t simply chase famous brands or regions. Instead, they rationally seek out value for money, adhering to the principle of “only settling for good wine.” Chateau Moulin Haut Laroque serves as the perfect example of this. Though not widely known, it possesses the qualities of a premium wine, and most importantly, it remains affordably priced, making it highly sought-after among Japanese wine lovers.

The popularity of this wine received an additional boost from the masterpiece The Drops of God, which significantly raised its profile. Whenever this wine is sold, the story is often told of how the owner, Jean-Noël Hervé, dismissed the importance of Robert Parker’s ratings, famously saying, “I can live happily even without high scores from Mr. Parker.”

However, if you visit the winery’s official website today, you’ll clearly see Robert Parker’s scores and tasting notes prominently displayed. One can’t help but wonder whether this shift reflects a change in approach brought by the younger generation, moving away from the old-school principles. Interestingly, 2012 was precisely the year when Thomas Hervé, the new generation (and a finance graduate ), officially joined the estate and began participating in its operations.

Region

Fronsac, a renowned appellation on Bordeaux's Right Bank, is a region crouching with hidden tigers and dragons —a haven for undiscovered gems. This estate spans 42 acres (16 hectares), perched on the beautiful slopes of Côtes de Sérans and atop the Fronsac plateau. The vineyard is planted with four main varieties in the following proportions: 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Malbec from old vines aged 100+ years. The soil is composed of clay and limestone—an alkaline terrain considered ideal for producing high-quality Bordeaux wines.

Winemaking

Back to the wine itself. Seeing the label of the 1908 Moulin Haut Laroque on the official website already tells us that the estate's history is profound. The Hervé family's roots trace back to 1607, with official records showing they were already bottling wine in the Fronsac appellation in the 19th century. Unlike many other châteaux that changed hands frequently, this continuity of ownership has been tremendously helpful in ensuring consistent quality.
The Hervé family is deeply rooted in the Fronsac region. The estate spans 16 hectares, but the most remarkable feature is undoubtedly the vine age . It boasts over 100-year-old Malbec vines and 70-year-old Cabernet Franc vines, with the average vine age across the estate being over 45 years.
Hand-harvesting and manual grape selection are standard practice. The wine undergoes 18 months of oak barrel aging, with 35% of the barrels being new. And finally, one key name that can't be overlooked is the contribution of consulting winemaker Michel Rolland.
As described in The Drops of God :
"Made from grapes grown without herbicides, in soft soil... A reliable, well-known regional wine of excellent quality – you have no reason to miss it."
Winemaking Details:
Michel Rolland and Christian Veyry are the winemakers for the estate. They maintain strict control over every step of the winemaking process. After the grapes are handpicked, they undergo a rigorous manual sorting. The selected grapes are then transported to the winery for destemming and a second sorting.
During fermentation, the winemakers employ different techniques tailored to each grape variety. To avoid damaging the fruit, the grapes are fermented directly in temperature-controlled vats. The wine is then aged for 14 to 15 months before bottling.
Wines from this estate have repeatedly received praise from renowned critics and have won numerous awards.
Rating

【James Suckling 91 pts】

Beautiful aromas of cherries, lemons and apples. Medium to full body, integrated and polished tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Better in 2019.

【Robert Parker 87 pts】
The 2014 Moulin-Haut-Laroque has a strong marine, fishy scent on the nose that takes you straight down to the Gironde estuary. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, simple but balanced with sufficient blackberry and raspberry fruit to give pleasure on the easygoing finish. Drink over the next three to five years.
