HISTORY
The story of Domaine La Barroche revolves around people, terroir and passion. The passion is for the good things in life – the love of simple, honest pleasures. At Domaine de Barroche, we love our vineyards, our wine and all that is authentic.
"Good seed produces a good crop": there have been generations of winegrowers from the same family in the domaine's long history. Grenache is king in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and has flowed in the family's veins since the 14th century.
Today, Domaine La Barroche is represented by a veritable patchwork of family members, in much that way that Châteauneuf-du-Pape's 13 grape varieties reflect the appellation's complexity. Each person has their own individual character, but the same love of the terroir. Here is a non-exhaustive list of the men and women who have built, shaped, developed and inspired the Domaine through the centuries.
Alexandre Barrot, the founder
The family patriarch, Alexandre, bought the first land comprising the present-day Domaine in the village de Châteauneuf du Pape in 1703. It has been handed down from father to son ever since.
Eugène Gabriel Barrot, discoverer of terroirs
In the late 19th century, the present owners' great-grandfather, Eugène Gabriel, carefully observed the soil in order to select plots worthy of planting with vines.
At that time, it was normal for people to help their neighbours and, seeing as Eugène Gabriel had two winepresses, he often went to nearby estates to press their grapes from them.
Bearing witness to times past, one of these winepresses is exhibited in the Père Anselme Museum, in the heart of the village.
Women winegrowers, essential to the Domaine in many ways
Far too often in the shadow, the women at Domaine La Barroche constantly strive to keep life at the Domaine going smoothly. They are the salt of the earth – the binding agent of the Barrot family and virtuosos at perpetuating an enviable lifestyle from generation to generation.
Christian Barrot, an unwavering passion
Even though young people at many neighbouring estates left to work in factories and abandoned their family vineyards in the middle of the wine crisis in the 1970s, Christian Barrot decided to take over the family estate. Wine, at this time, was just a simple commodity, and even the great growths of Bordeaux were sold on church forecourts on Sunday. Everywhere in France, people were only interested in high yields and low prices thanks to the agricultural revolution.
However, Christian knew the value of his terroir and what it was capable of producing. So he focused on making the most of it. He sold his wine in bulk to prestigious wine merchants in the northern Côtes du Rhône.
Plot by plot, year after year, Christian achieved his vineyard's full potential.
He bottled a small part of the wine himself, calling it Lou Destré D’Antan (meaning "The Winepress of Days Gone By" in Provençal) in honour of his grandfather.
Julien & Laetitia Barrot, the up-and-coming generation
Julien and Laetitia, brother and sister, are totally committed to their terroir, and exemplify the family values handed down to them. They arrived at the family estate in the early 2000s, and their future looks very bright.
Laetitia, the elder sibling, contributes her feminine sensitivity to a world that is traditionally masculine. She is unquestionably one of the Domaine's driving forces and totally indispensable for its development. With a background in communication and international commerce, she considers the world small, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape its centre.
After working for large international groups for over a decade, Laetitia felt the need to get back to her roots and to promote her family's terroir and its wine.
Julien, the younger brother, has the resolute character typical of winegrowers devoted to their vocation and appellation. He came to work at the estate in 2002, barely 22 years of age, just after finishing his studies of oenology and with a business degree. Motivated by a burning desire to learn, he belongs to the new, totally committed generation of winemakers who are very open-minded, although greatly respectful of the terroir and the traditions passed on from previous generations.
He has been responsible for making several vintages and pinpointing the specific qualities of every plot, leading to the creation of various cuvées with their own individual character: Pure and Fiancée.

OUR VINEYARD
A family-owned estate with 36 acres of vines, Domaine La Barroche nevertheless features a variety of terroirs in the northern and north-eastern part of the appellation, reflecting the best in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The variety of soils, diverse grape varieties, and hundred year old vines make Domaine la Barroche stand out.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is famous for its complex blend of grape varieties: 13 different ones! However, Grenache remains the most important, the soloist that provides focus to the entire symphony.

Most of the Grenache vines were planted in the early 19th century and have been lovingly tended generation after generation. These vines are thus over a hundred years old and have produced several legendary vintages.
Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Cinsault, Clairette Blanche, and Vaccarèse are the main grape varieties grown on the estate. However, if you look carefully, you will also see a few old, forgotten varieties here and there among the oldest vines – mostly Terret Noir and Clairette Rose.
«You cannot make a great wine without a great terroir, and a great terroir is nothing without the winemaker’s love for his vines.»
The soil at Domaine La Barroche is atypical, since nearly 80% of all plots have sandy topsoil and limestone much deeper down. As for the soil in the remaining part of the vineyard, this consists of red clay, river stones, and red sandstone whose colour is due to iron concretions.
Le Pointu, Le Pialon, Le Tresquoi, Rayas, Palestor, etc. These divisions are more due to historical reasons than to similar terroir.
At Domaine La Barroche, no vineyard plot is really typical of the district where it is located. In Les Terres Blanches, for instance, the Grenache vines grow on a sandy slope, whereas most of the neighbouring vineyards have river stones. Likewise, the vines at Les Cabrières grow in clay soil, whereas the surrounding terroir mostly features river stones. Grand Pierre, a mythical plot located on the Rayas slope, has sandy soil typical of the Domaine, combined with red Comtat sandstone.
All these different terroirs constitute a huge advantage for La Barroche. They allow the various grape varieties to express themselves differently, and give depth and subtlety to the wine. Producing complex, homogeneous wines reflecting the unique identity of each plot, the Domaine is truly representative of its appellation.

Thick, unctuous and the epitome ofhedonism, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape is easily the most decadent andconcentrated Pure produced to date. Possessing tons of sweet kirsch and darkerfruits, roasted meats, lavender and truffle, it's massive and backward on thepalate, with a full, stacked mid-palate and an almost overflowing amount offruit that somehow stays lively, weightless and fresh. I found the '05 and '10to have a tad more vibrancy at this tasting, but certainly, this is one of themost profound Grenaches I've tasted. A word of warning, this cuvee has knownIssues of having some bottles referment, so proceed with caution.

Assuming one can find any of the 500 or socases that are made, the wine “to die for” is the 2007 Chateauneuf du PapePure. I have a tendency to underrate this wine, as both the 2005, which I findpure perfection, and the nearly equal-in-quality 2006, both put on weight andcomplexity after a year or two in the bottle, but there is not a whole lot ofroom to improve in 2007. Coming from the very sandy soils of the lieu-dit inChateauneuf du Pape known as Grand Pierre, this is 100% Grenache from vinesthat are about 110 years of age! Aged both in foudre and tank prior to beingbottled unfiltered, in its three versions to date, it is undeniably one of thegreatest expressions of pure Grenache in the world. An awesome wine with anextraordinary nose of melted licorice, spring flowers, black cherries, andblack currants, the wine hits the palate with a full-bodied, thunderous impactbut never, ever becomes heavy or ponderous. It is an ethereal,super-concentrated wine of great elegance, precision, and freshness, but withunbelievable concentration and length.

Inky purple. Huge, expressive bouquet showsdark berry, floral and fruitcake qualities, along with a smoky mineral note.Lush and creamy, with deep boysenberry and blueberry flavors and velvetytannins. Turns spicier on the back half and finishes with outstanding clarityand juicy persistence. As massive as this is, there's no sense of overripenessor excess weight.
