HISTORY

Château Coutet is one of the oldest estates in Sauternes. The construction dates from the late 13th century or early 14th, as evidenced by its tower which is of the same design as those used by the Army during the English occupation of Guyenne. Another vestige of these times, a second tower is located in the garden in order to raise pigeons and peacocks for the Gascon lords. At the beginning of the 18th century, major changes were made and modified the main residence. The surrounding area was planted with French style gardens. In 1788, the domain was acquired by Gabriel-Barthélémy-Romain de Filhot, President of the Parliament of Bordeaux and already owner of Château Filhot in Sauternes. In 1794, Mr de Filhot was guillotined and the property passed into the hands of his grandson, the Marquis Romain-Bertrand de Lur Saluces. Chateau Coutet is therefore closely linked with Château d'Yquem, Château Filhot and Château de Malle, in a group of winemaking properties that have made the Marquis de Lur Saluces by far the largest producer of sweet white wines in the world. In 1922, Château Coutet was purchased by Louis Guy, a manufacturer of hydraulic presses and wine equipment, and this transaction finally ended the relationship with Château d'Yquem. It was at this time that the famous cuvée Madame was inaugurated in honor of Mrs. Rolland Guy, the wife of the new owner. Marcel Baly and his two sons, Philippe and Dominique, bought Château Coutet in 1977. They quickly decided to renovate the vineyard and the wineries. Today, the quality of the wines testifies to the work they have provided: Château Coutet remains one of the most famous cru of the Sauternes-Barsac appellation.

Quite a smokey nose (from oak?) but a lot of ripe mango flavors, too. This balances a rich texture and bright acidity very nicely. The finish is long for a second wine (of Château Coutet).
