Brunello is the prince of Montalcino wines, produced exclusively from Sangiovese grapes picked by hand from the oldest vines in the farm. After a careful fermentation at controlled temperature, Tenuta Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino is aged in French oak barrels. After being aged in wood, the wine is bottle aged: this is an essential process in guaranteeing the pleasantness and the complexity that have made the Brunello di Montalcino world-famous.
Source: The winery's oldest vineyards, planted between 150 and 450 metres (490 - 1475 ft) above sea level.
Vine training system: Cordon spur and "doppio capovolto".
Harvest: By hand
Vinification: 15 - 20 days "submerged cap" fermentation in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts at a controlled temperature 25/28 °C (77/82 F). Malolactic fermentation in stainless steel.
Aging: Around 30 months in large French oak barrels (30 - 50 hl or 872 -1373 Gallon) followed by a long bottle aging.

HISTORY
LAVINIO FRANCESCHI, LAND OWNER FROMFLORENCE, DECIDED TO VISIT THE AREA AFTER HEARING THE STORIES FROM A SHEPHERD,WHO BROUGHT HIS HERDS AROUND MONTALCINO DURING THE WINTER. HE FELL SO MUCH INLOVE WITH THE LANDSCAPE AND THE PEOPLE WHO LIVED IN THAT AREA THAT HE DECIDEDTO BUY LAND AND ESTABLISH A FARM.
Generation after generation, many resources were spent on research for quality, clonal selections, winemaking and aging techniques, and also by building a modern winery for the standards at that time.
Il Poggione was one of the first wineries to market the Brunello di Montalcino wine as early as the 1900’s, and one of the founding members of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium.
After more than a Century, Lavinio Franceschi’s work is still a fundamental point of reference for his successors, Leopoldo and Livia, who continue to develop the business with that same dedication and unrelenting passion, combining the ancient skills of winemaking crafts and tradition with the latest, most innovative techniques.

NOW
TENUTA IL POGGIONE COVERS AN AREA OF 530HECTARES (1300 ACRES), OF WHICH 140 HECTARES (336 ACRES) ARE PLANTED WITH VINESAND 50 HECTARES (120 ACRES) WITH OLIVE TREES; THE REST ARE DEDICATED TO GRAINFIELDS, FOREST AND LIVESTOCK.
THE ESTATE’S GUIDING PRINCIPLE IS TO PAYGREAT CARE TO THE VINES, BECAUSE THE SECRET OF PRODUCING GREAT RED WINES LIESIN THE HIGH-QUALITY VINEYARD WORK.
In the light of a sustainable agriculture, the winery has always planted different crops along the vineyards and limited the use of chemicals.
Most recently, it has installed solar panels on the roof of its cellar, with the purpose to reduce the carbon footprint of its wines. The vineyard work is mainly manual, for the harvest and for the other jobs.
Thanks to the practice of the green harvest, the monitoring of the vineyards’ health conditions and the soil’s nutritional needs, it is possible to obtain an excellent wine even in more difficult vintages.

TERROIR
TENUTA IL POGGIONE IS IN SANT’ANGELO INCOLLE, APPROXIMATELY 10 KM (6 MILES) SOUTH OF MONTALCINO.
THANKS TO ITS DOMINATING POSITION, THEVINEYARDS – INCLUDING VIGNA PAGANELLI, PLANTED IN 1964 – BENEFIT FROM THEPROXIMITY OF MOUNT AMIATA AND THE TYRRHENIAN SEA.
The vineyards are at an altitude between150 and 450 metres (490 – 1475 feet) above sea level.
This large gap, together with the age of the vineyards, promotes easier harvest and allows the production of structured wines with long aging potential, regardless of the weather conditions.

CELLAR
THE NEW WINERY
IN 2004 THE NEW WINERY WAS BUILT IN THEHEART OF THE PROPERTY, WHERE THE ESTATE’S ŒNOLOGICAL TRADITION MEETS THE MOSTAVANT-GARDE TECHNOLOGIES.
After the harvest the wine ferments at controlled temperature with indigenous yeasts, inside stainless steel tanks with the “submerged cap” technique. Thanks to this type of fermentation, it is possible to obtain intense colours and flavours and honour the style of Brunello di Montalcino.

AGING
LARGE FRENCH OAK BARRELS
FIVE METRES UNDER THE VINIFICATION CELLARTHE WINERY KEEPS ITS LARGE FRENCH OAK BARRELS USED FOR AGING THE WINES.
The winery selects the best French oak to be used for its barrels directly from the source. The oak beams season outside for at least 4 years before being used by the cooper for the barrels. Since it is completely underground, the cellar’s temperature and humidity are naturally ideal, which allows an optimal aging and storage of the wine.

Lots of sliced mushroom and berry character. Lots of flowers such as lilacs and violets. Full body, firm tannins and a fresh and clean finish. It's harmonious and beautiful.

The Il Poggione 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is not showing as well as expected. Whereas the challenging 2012 vintage exceeds expectations, the celebrated 2010 edition is not especially expressive. We opened two bottles from the cellar to compare, and although there was variation, with the second bottle outperforming the first, they both felt closed. These notes are based on the second bottle that showed an overall cleaner bouquet with dried fruit, dusty mineral and dry clay. The wine delivers ample textural heft, and the tannins are upright and precise. However, the overall delivery is muted and shallow. You are left wanting more from the wine, and I wonder if it is going through an awkward phase at this moment with the potential to extend and open in the coming years.

Il Poggione's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a remarkably beautiful wine.Rose petal, mint, cinnamon, sweet dark cherries and smoke lift from theglass in a translucent, wiry Brunello built on energy and power. This is anespecially lifted, precise and nuanced Brunello from ll Poggione, with moreemphasis on length and mid-weight sfructure rather than overt volume. lnmany ways, the 2010 comes across as a modern-day version of the 1982Riserva. Readers who have tasted that wine know just how special that is.For the money, there is not a single better wine being made in Montalcinothan ll Poggione's Brunello. Truth is, it is also better than many far moreexpensive offerings. There are two Brunellos l would buy confidently in anyvintage. This is one of them.
