According to legend, pineau des Charentes was created by a Charentais wine-grower by accident in 1859. The man poured by mistake grape must (juice) in a barrel that already had cognac eau-de-vie. A few years later, after a big harvest, the precious barrel was needed. He discovered a beautiful drink, pineau des Charentes.
The Painturaud’s family pineau is what we can really call a home-made pineau. Far away from the enormous volumes produced by merchants, our family was able to keep the pineau’s identity, the one produced by our ancestors. Thanks to skills passed down from one generation to another and aging the pineau in 100+ year old barrels in the original family cellars.
A blend of from Ugni-blanc, Colombard and Montils make this liqueur winewith a straw yellow colour and reflections of old gold. On the nose our Pineau Blanc is fruity and floral with hints of honey. The mouth feel is supple, well-balanced, with a fresh ending. The Pineau is ideal for an aperitif, but can also be served with strong cheeses (Roquefort, Vieux Comté) or used in cooking (sauces, déglaçage).
Maison Painturaud Frères was founded in 1804. It was rebuilt and managed at the end of the 19th century by Hippolyte Painturaud, after the big phylloxera crisis. Then in 1934, Guy Painturaud, the son of Hippolyte, decided to sell his cognac and Pineau des Charentes under his own name to differentiate himself from all the big Cognac merchants. As a result, our company Maison Painturaud Frères was born. Guy Painturaud was one of the first winegrowers to sell Pineau des Charentes. His son Jacques, took over in 1973 : Jacques grew the business by taking part in numerous national wine and spirit fairs and starting a shop in Segonzac.”
In 2010, Jacques handed over the business to his sons Jean-Philippe, Vincent, Matthieu and Emmanuel, the Maison Painturaud Frères 4th generation. They’ll continue to carry on 200 years of skill, know-how and family tradition.

Les Frères Painturaud are local producers, sellers in trade fairs across France, and travel the world to introduce and initiate their treasures. The Cognacs and Pineaux des Charentes are authentic and high end. They come from a unique “terroir” and secular skills, family traditions passed on from father to son to offer consumers a rare experience in the heart of the Grande Champagne, Cognac’s Premier Cru.
The vineyard is exclusively planted on hillsides rich in limestone that favour the creation of eaux-de-vie of a great finesse, particularly fit to age in oak barrels, typical to the Grande Champagne terroir.
