The history of the winery is closely tied to the history of Margaux. From 1871 both owners of the winery served as municipal officials in the town of Margaux until 1978 when Ms. Bernadette Villars took over the winery. In 1993, her daughter Claire Villars Lurton took over the winery from her mother, and she also owns the 1855-class Chateau Ferriere, the fifth-class Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal and the middle-class Chateau Domeyne. Before 2008, the winery had been ranked Cru Bourgeois Supérieur. In 1988, 50 famous wine critics gathered in the town of Margaux to taste the wine style of the Margaux region. They selected La Gurgue winery as one of the ten wineries that best embody the style of the Margaux region.

The winery’s vineyard is located on the top of Curton, which has the best terroir in the village of Margaux, half surrounded by Château Margaux vineyards. The average age of its vines is around 30 years, and the liquor will be packed into French oak barrels and aged for 12 months in a cellar half located underground.

Tasting Note: Intense violet floral, black cloth, cherry, mint leaves, pepper and pronounced smoky aromas, full body, moderate acidity, firm, delicate tannins, rose sauce, sage, lemon peel, minerals and roasted coffee beans are released layer by layer. The entire wine is elegantly balanced and rich in layers, with Margaux’s characteristic traditional style
