The winery was founded in 2017 by an American couple, Denise Dupre and Mark Nunnelly, in partnership with French businessman Jean Luc Vitoux. It is known as a "high-end private custom wine merchant" in the wine industry. Unlike other Burgundy wine merchants, the winery only cooperates with organic or biodynamic grape growers, and does not use any blending. It adheres to the principle of one grape grower, one land, one wine, respecting and fully reflecting the personal characteristics of each grape grower and the diversity of Burgundy's charming Climat. The winery will not use new barrels, so as not to let the oak barrels cover the essence of the wine. This winery is definitely worth the attention of all Burgundy wine lovers!
Region
Charmes-Chambertin is located in the village of Gevrey Chambertin. It was founded in July 1937 together with the other eight Grand Crus in the village. Compared with the Grand Crus around it that produce rich and full-bodied wines, Charmes-Chambertin's wine style is more fresh and soft, and has a feminine and charming color. People naturally think that this is the origin of its name "Charmes".
In fact, the word "Charmes" has multiple meanings. One is "thousand-gold elm", which is often cut to make farm tools or wheels. The second is "abandoned land", which is abandoned because there are too many stones or it is too difficult to cultivate. The third is the meaning known to the general public: "charm". Obviously, the last explanation is more like a coincidence. The real reason often comes from the second explanation. Due to less human interference, it has become a habitat for many wild animals and plants, which not only cultivates amazing biodiversity in the plot, but also has the effect of soil and water conservation.
As farming techniques evolved, local farmers were able to develop plots that were difficult to cultivate. These vineyards benefited from the biological essence accumulated over hundreds of years. As long as they were not sprayed with chemical fertilizers, they usually had good soil structure and vitality, and were naturally organic.
Charmes-Chambertin has a beautiful sunny slope with clay and limestone soil. The plot is adjacent to three grand crus: Chambertin, Mazoyères, and Griotte. Interestingly, Mazoyères and Charmes have a special agreement. Grape growers can bottle and sell under the name of another plot, but most of them choose to write Charmes-Chambertin when bottling!
The wines from this plot are full-bodied, with some blue-purple color when young, and generally have the same long aftertaste as Chambertin.
