The Lisini company, dating back as far as1500, boasts excellent quality wines such as the red wine Brunello diMontalcino, Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Ugolaiaobtained from Sangiovese vineyards.

Lisini's history and philosophy

A house with a very ancient history, datingback to the 1500s, however, the viticultural activity began in the first halfof the 1900s, and then made a significant leap in quality towards the 1960s.

In fact, the Lisini are an illustriousfamily of Sienese merchants who in 1850 became related to the Clementi diMontalcino family. It was thanks to the marriage between Lodovico Lisini, lawyer and owner of lands in Chianti (specifically in Radda in Chianti), andFrancesca Clementi that the Lisinis became owners of all the lands owned by theClementi as early as 1500. From this marriage Alessandro Lisini was born, mayorof Siena at the beginning of the century, historical and prestigiousnumismatist.

Agriculture was by no means neglected, however, and Alessandro Lisini's son, Ludovico, took an active interest in hisproperties in Sant’Angelo in Colle, selecting sites of the caliber of LeCappannelle and Ugolaia for the Sangiovese plantation.

This part of Montalcino boasts splendidsoils, excellent exposures and ideal heights for the great Tuscan varieties, really suitable for the plantation of soft grapes of superb quality, among thebest in the whole appellation.

It was Ludovico's daughter, Elina, whoproved this hypothesis; she, together with other pioneer families, such asBiondi-Santi, Colombini Cinelli and Costanti, were the first to produce theimportant bottles that made Brunello di Montalcino a truly exceptional wine. The rest is history, as the nearly 2000 hectares of Brunello now in productioncan testify.

Lisini's wines

Elina Lisini was also deeply aware of theneed to pay more attention to quality.

And after the first phase of productionthat lasted about 25 years, (at a time when professionalism was taking itsfirst steps in Italian viticulture and enology), the 1970s and the followingdecades saw a completely different approach, one in which awareness ofSangiovese's potential as a world-class first-class grape, became the basis fornew ambitions and goals.

An exceptional quality was in fact alreadypresent in the wines of 1983 and 1985 and has never been exhausted in the wholecollection: Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino and Brunello MontalcinoUgolaia, the last from a cru that defended exceptional foresight by LudovicoLisini.

The terrific aromas of strawberry, cherry and currant are accented by underbrush, spice and tobacco elements on the palate in this elegant and intense red, which builds to a persistent finish. Fruit and mineral accents echo on the aftertaste.

Lisini’s 2008 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the few wines of the vintage that is going to require patience. A big, broad-shouldered wine, the 2008 fills out nicely over time with attractive black fruit, smoke, tar, game and savory herb notes. Although quite virile and imposing today, the 2008 also shows striking inner perfume and a level of sweetness that is likely to require some time to emerge, suggesting the wine has plenty of potential for improvement ahead. The 2008 spent 42 months in French oak, exceedingly long by today’s standards.

A pretty purity of fruit for the vintage with lovely perfumes. Full to medium body, with fine tannins and a clean fresh finish
