Background
The Chapoutier family can trace their history in the Rhône region back to 1808, but it was in 1879 that Polydor Chapoutier bought his first vineyards and started the actual business. In the mid-20th century Max Chapoutier led the business, until his retirement in 1977, after which his sons Michel Chapoutier and Marc Chapoutier took over. Some years later, during the 1980s, quality improved, under Michel Chapoutier's leadership over the vineyardsand winemaking facilities. By the late 1980s, Chapoutier had started to receive considerable international attention for the wines' quality.
During the 19th century an Austrian scientist, Rudolf Steiner, laid the groundwork for biodynamics. His idea was simple: a plant never lives alone, it belongs to an ecosystem. It finds nutrition in the ground and if it grows with the energy provided by light. It sounds simple but it was a revelation at its time. In 1991 Michel Chapoutier made the decisive choice to apply these biodynamical methods to the vine. His choice was questioned by many at that time, but Michel remained confident about one thing: he would reveal the truth of the terroirs.
Established 1808 in Tain-l’Hermitage, at the heart of the Rhone Valley. Maison M. CHAPOUTIER looks carefully after their vineyards from one season to another. It’s the fruit of this work and the endless curiosity of Michel Chapoutier and his team that have been rewarded for a few years with this title of first French Wine Brands among the 50 laureates. M. CHAPOUTIER has jumped up from the 6th to 5th, making the brand the top french producer in this year’s list. It reinforces its position as a key wine maker in France and abroad. Maison M. CHAPOUTIER has been part of the prestigious ranking since its first edition in 2011 and was ranked the first French brand 5 times in 9 years(2012, 2013, 2016, 2018 and 2019!). (Ref. Chapoutier, who loves to cook, concluded by stressing that "wine is to be married with food"—its expression is limited without it. "I really believe all winemakers should take some cooking courses."
"A bad marriage is when you have a dominant person with a subordinate person. I always try to explain that to my wife," he quipped, getting a big laugh from the crowd. A good marriage is complementary, relies on compromise, looks for length and complexity instead of power. "The food has to influence the personality of the wine, and the wine has to influence the personality of the food. They have to change to create a combined personality."

The profound 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape BarbeRac boasts a deep ruby/purple color as well as a nose of garrigue, licorice,kirsch liqueur, cassis, and new saddle leather. This superbly concentrated,full-bodied, multidimensional wine coats the palate with glycerin and sweetfruit. There is not a hard edge to be found, but wow, what intensity and length(the finish lasts for close to one minute). The 2001 should turn out to be alegendary effort capable of lasting 15-20 years.

Good medium red. Brooding aromas ofredcurrant liqueur, minerals, dried flowers and garrigue Dense,superconcentrated and powerful, with terrific structure and the sheer materialto buffer the 15. 5% alcohol. Intensely spicy, elegant Chateauneuf, with verysuave tannins and superb persistence.
