🏅International Wine and Spirit Competition 2017 - GOLD

Oban can be said to be a niche but popular Scotch whiskey. The distillery is located in Oban Town in the western Highlands region of Scotland, UK. It is now a whiskey brand under Diageo and is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland.
Although it was founded a long time ago, Oban's scale is still very small, with only two distillers and an annual output of less than 700,000 liters. Compared with wineries with a production capacity of millions or tens of millions of liters, Oban can be said to be "pitiful" for its small size. Coupled with the need to supply raw wine to its big boss Diageo, the market for Oban is actually very limited.

In 1793, local merchants and entrepreneurs Hugh Stevenson and John Stevenson established the Oban Brewery Company. In 1794, the Oban Distillery was officially established and is located on the site of an old brewery.
In 1813, Hugh's son Thomas Stevenson returned from Buenos Aires and began to participate in the operation of the Oban Distillery. In 1819, Thomas's father was elected as the second Provost of Oban and died a year later. In 1821, Thomas purchased the remaining shares of the Auburn Brewing Company. When Thomas started operating the distillery, momentum was strong. However, due to a series of bad investments later, Thomas was deeply in debt. In order to save the distillery, his eldest son John Stevenson bought the distillery in 1830. In 1866, when the Stevenson family declined, local businessman Peter Cumstie bought the Oban Distillery. In 1883, Peter sold the distillery to J. Walter Higgin. In 1890, a fire broke out in the distillery and whiskey production was affected. After the fire, James renovated and modernized the distillery to his own standards.
In 1898, James sold the Oban Distillery to a consortium at the height of the whiskey craze. In 1900 Eupen suffered heavy losses due to the Pattison Crisis, but production at the distillery continued. In 1930, Scottish Malt Distillers took over Oban Distillery. Due to its central location in the town of Oban, which was not conducive to the expansion of the distillery, the Oban Distillery planned to close in 1968. In 1972, in order to avoid the closure of the distillery, Oban built a new distillery. After this extensive reconstruction, the distillery reopened. Today, Eupen continues to thrive under the stewardship of Diageo.

Oban is one of the few distilleries in Scotland that still uses the traditional "Worm Tub". The water used by the distillery in the process of producing whiskey comes from Loch Glenn a' Bhearraidh), the malt used comes from Diageo's malt factory. Oban Distillery can be regarded as a mini distillery in Scotland, with only one wash still and one pot still. Because of this, Oban's output is very small, ranking Diageo's third in terms of output. Second small winery. Eupen's pot stills are short, lantern-shaped, with a large, round spherical lid and a conical neck. The oak barrels used for aging in Eupen are mainly White Oak Cask and Sherry Cask. In addition, there are also some special oak barrels used to age Distillers' Editions whiskey, such as Montilla Fino Sherry Cask.

Oban 14 Year Old was named one of the six classic malt whiskeys representing the Western Highlands region in 1989. A perfect blend of Scottish Highland whiskey and West Coast whiskey, it has a dry, smoky flavor with fruit and honey notes. Ian Buxton once rated Oban 14 as "This is a lovely thing" in the 101 Whiskeys You Must Drink in a Lifetime!
