Winery

Regarding the most substantial price increases in Bordeaux wines in recent years, Clerc Milon undoubtedly ranks among the top (in percentage terms). The price of its grand vin has nearly doubled within just a few years. Although prices have risen across the board, it remains in high demand.

The second label, Pastourelle, was introduced in 2009, making its history relatively short and less circulated compared to other classified growths' second labels. It is less commonly seen among wine enthusiasts. Apart from a certain merchant currently offering the 2009 vintage at a 32% discount on their official website (still priced at around $390), anyone who previously bought it at the original price of $580 might feel like they’ve drawn the short straw... leaving them with nothing but a sense of regret.

Clerc Milon is a familiar name to many, often enjoyed and well-known. "Pastourelle" in French refers to a traditional dance, depicting the romantic "Boom Cha Cha" between a knight and a shepherdess. The estate belongs to Baron Philippe de Rothschild's "Five Arrows" portfolio, alongside Château Mouton Rothschild and Château d'Armailhac. Although Clerc Milon is classified as a Cru Bourgeois, its prices have reached the level of a Classified Growth. The grand vin from excellent vintages is approaching the price of "a golden bull" (a colloquial term for a high price).

Thus, the current offer of the 2010 second label for around $300 represents exceptional value. The winemaking team at Clerc Milon includes Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy, the winemaker of Opus One, and the winemaking methods and craftsmanship are on par with those used for the grand vin. This trend reflects the broader movement among renowned estates to further elevate the quality and price of their grand vins. Due to stricter grape selection, more grapes that would have previously qualified for the grand vin now go into the second label, resulting in an overall improvement in the quality of second labels. In outstanding vintages, they can even rival the quality of lesser vintages or younger grand vins that are not yet ready to drink.

 Region

The 2009 and 2010 vintages of this estate can be described as flawless—truly among the best years (on par with 2005) to experience the peak of the winery's expression. The grand vin 2010 will likely need another decade or so before reaching its optimal drinking window, but the second label is the perfect choice for early enjoyment.

It embodies the classic Pauillac style, revealing alluring notes of black fruits, blackcurrant, cedar, oak, licorice, tobacco cigar, smoke, leather, and pepper, while also blending in more contemporary hints of cherry, jam, cocoa, and chocolate. Decant for 1–2 hours, and you’ll discover in your glass exactly why the wines from this estate continue to command higher prices.

If you miss the opportunity to drink a well-aged wine from a great vintage, you might be left with younger vintages like 2013, 2015, or 2016. Moreover, many second labels are now hard to find—often seen only in pictures but not available for purchase. Truly enjoying wine is about securing a good bottle at a fair price, having it delivered to your home, and pouring it into your glass.

Winemaking
Carmenère, a grape variety frequently featured in Chilean wines, originates from France's Médoc region. Although it is an authorized AOC grape, it truly shone after being brought to Chile. In Bordeaux, it is often referred to as "the lost grape," with only a handful of estates still cultivating and incorporating it into their blends. Among them, Petit Mouton (note: likely a colloquial reference to a specific estate) and Right Bank châteaux such as Château de Fonbel and Vauthier continue to use Carmenère in their wines.
Notably, Clerc Milon boasts the largest planting area of Carmenère in Bordeaux and is home to the oldest Carmenère vines, dating back to 1947.
Rating

【James Suckling 92 pts】

A fresh and clean red with plum and berry character. Medium body, fine tannins and a crisp finish. Drink now

【Robert Parker's 90 pts】

This has a ripe, generous bouquet with blackberry, cedar and a touch of dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, good density and structure, leading to a focused, masculine finish. This is a serious second wine that will benefit from 3-4 years in bottle.
