Robert Mondavi established his namesake winery in 1966 with a vision to create Napa Valley wines that would stand in the company of the world’s finest. He chose To Kalon Vineyard in the heart of the Napa Valley as the home for Robert Mondavi Winery. 

Robert chose To Kalon, located in the heart of Napa Valley, as the location of the winery. This vineyard is famous for producing the best Cabernet Sauvignon wine in the world. To Kalon is rated as the No. 1 vineyard in North America and the No. 5 vineyard in the world. In ancient Greek, it means "the best and the most beautiful".

Later, Robert and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, the owner of Chateau Mouton Rothschild, jointly created the American "wine king" - Opus One. One of the reasons for its success was also the excellent Cabernet Sauvignon grapes of To Kalon.

In the 1950s and 1960s, California wine was almost a symbol of cheapness. When establishing the winery, Robert's vision was to create Napa Valley wine that could stand out among the best wineries in the world.

He brought many advanced technologies and winemaking concepts to the United States, such as stainless steel fermentation tanks, French oak barrel aging, low-temperature fermentation, and natural planting methods. At the same time, he vigorously promoted the concept that "Napa Valley is the world's top wine producing region" and compared California wines with wines from well-known producing regions such as France and Italy by organizing various blind tasting competitions. Finally, he became famous at the "Judgment of Paris" in 1976 and reshaped the international image of American wine. Robert was also called the "Godfather of American Wine" for his outstanding achievements. In the winter of 2005, due to a financial crisis, Robert had to sell the winery to Constellation Wine Company of the United States.

Today, Robert Mondavi Winery is the largest winery producing high-quality wines in California, with an annual output of 1,500,000 boxes of wine and a total vineyard area of 440 hectares. The winery grows different grapes according to the terroir characteristics of each vineyard, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc being the main varieties.
