M.W.Heron, born in Ireland in 1850, came to New Orleans in 1870 as a bartender. The whiskey at that time was very spicy, and since consumers did not like it, he decided to develop a whiskey to satisfy consumers' tastes. So, he used the flavors of different liquors and spices to blend a smooth, refreshing and easy-to-drink whiskey (Cuffs and Buttons).

He kept the recipe a top secret (even now), and he sold his newly developed whisky by the glass.

In 1855, Heron officially renamed his product Southern Comfort for the World's Fair in New Orleans.

In 1898, Heron moved to Tennessee. When the bars in Tennessee heard about Heron's arrival, they came to him to ask for his secret recipe.

Heron discovered a business opportunity. Instead of teaching the secret recipe to anyone, he registered his recipe and bottled and sold SoCo. In 1900, SoCo won a gold medal at the Paris World Expo. In 1904, Heron used SoCo to mix the first cocktail, which was very popular and won him another gold medal!

In 1934, the Fowler family purchased the Southern Comfort brand and switched to its current packaging. The house in the label is the Fowler family's house. Because of the movie Gone with the Wind, Southern Comfort launched a cocktail named after the heroine in the play, which became an instant hit.
