Founded in London in the early 19th century, Tanqueray Gin replaced Beefeater in 2016 and has grown to become one of the best-selling gin brands in the world.
In the early 19th century, the Industrial Revolution led to the popularity of breweries. As the population grew, so did the demand for cheap alcohol. At the same time, reforms in distillation technology have also led to a sharp increase in the production speed of distilled spirits. Charles Tanqueray saw the opportunity and founded the Tanqueray Distillery in Bloomsbury, London in 1830.
Charles was born in 1810. His father, grandfather and great-uncle were all pastors of a parish outside London. However, Charles did not embark on the path of preaching. Instead, he chose to forge his own path and went to the winery to study with his brother Edward. The craft and how to become a gin distiller. By then, gin had already moved on from being a low-quality drink, so when the Tanqueray brothers entered the gin industry in 1830, it came at a good time. At first, this young winery focused on exports, mainly to the then British colony of Jamaica.
After founder Charles died in 1865, the company was taken over by Charles Waugh Tanqueray. As there were many gin distilleries in London at the time, in order to survive, Charles Waugh orchestrated the merger of Alexander Gordon & Co and Charles Tanqueray & Co in 1898, forming the largest gin distillery in the world. "When the companies merged, Gordon's became the gin of choice in the UK, and Tanqueray was introduced to the United States, where Tanqueray became even more popular. Today, Tanqueray is a well-known gin brand owned by international spirits group Diageo.
Although Charles joined his brother in the distilling business and took over the Goswell Road Distillery in 1835, Edward died just a few years later. In 1832, the invention of the continuous still helped Charles develop London Dry gin. Thus Charles Tanqueray became one of the first to create what became known as "London Dry" gin, as opposed to the Old Tom style popular at the time. Early Old Tom gin required heavy additions of sugar to cover up flaws in the distillation process, as distillation techniques at the time were unable to create a very pure base spirit. After starting the family business, Charles achieved success using only four plants, which are still the most important part of today's Tanqueray recipe: juniper, angelica root, licorice and coriander seed.

Through four distillations, the crops and spirits are perfectly matched, retaining the subtle changes in the aroma of the raw materials themselves. Rich and obvious aroma of juniper berries, angelica root, citrus peel, lavender and violet, and elegant lemon aroma, rich in layers; smooth and balanced spice flavor.
