Tennessee-based whiskey brand Uncle Nearest has a strong African-American heritage. It is rumored that Nathan Nearest Green, the man for whom the brand is named and to whom it pays homage, was a Negro slave who taught young Jack Daniel how to distill whiskey, including the famous sugar maple filtration process, which involves cutting large quantities of sugar maple each year, drying it, burning it into charcoal, and piling it up in a pile for filtration. This method of filtration involved cutting and drying large quantities of sugar maple wood each year, burning it to make charcoal, and stacking it on top of the filtering vats into which the distilled spirit was poured and filtered. This method of filtration, thought to have been invented by Jack Daniel's, gave the whisky a subtle, soft flavor that made Jack Daniel's brand a big seller and even the number one seller of whisky in the United States.
