Duckhorn Vineyards is a renowned winery in Napa Valley, California, USA.Founded in 1976 by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn, the winery has spent over 30 years establishing itself as one of the best producers of high-quality Bordeaux varietal wines. Today, Duckhorn Vineyards owns seven vineyards in Napa Valley: Candlestick Ridge Vineyard, Stout Vineyard, Monitor Ledge Vineyard, Three Palms Vineyard, Marlee's Vineyard, Rector Creek Vineyard, Patzimaro Vineyard, and Cork Tree Vineyard. Each vineyard offers the winemaker a distinctive flavor profile.
Of the grape varieties cultivated, Merlot is the winery's primary focus. In the late 1970s in Napa, most wineries typically used Merlot as a secondary blending variety, rarely exploring its independent character. Dan, however, believed that North American soils, like those on the right bank of Bordeaux, were ideal for Merlot, and thus he subsequently cultivated it extensively. In addition to Merlot, the winery's vineyards also cultivate Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Chenin Blanc.
Winemaking
Duckhorn Vineyards' winemaking philosophy begins with a core principle: "Wines are made in the vineyard." Since its founding in 1976, this renowned Napa Valley estate has redefined the standard of Merlot in the United States through its respect for the land and its meticulous attention to detail. The winery owns nine single-vineyard plots, encompassing top-tier sites such as St. Helena, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain, and strictly controls yields to a low level of 3-4 tons per acre to ensure fruit quality. In winemaking, Duckhorn uses whole-vine fermentation and aging in 25 different types of oak barrels from 13 cooperages, giving the winemaker considerable flexibility in blending. For white spirits, French oak barrel fermentation and lees stirring techniques are employed to create a rounded texture. With over 20 years of experience as chief winemaker, Renée Ary has led the winery to two consecutive Wine Spectator awards for "Wine of the Year 2017" and "Wine Enthusiast Wine of the Year 2023," and a place on the "World's 50 Best Wineries" list in 2025.
