Rauzan-Ségla was once part of the vast Rauzan estate owned by Pierre de Mesures de Rauzan in the mid-17th century. Over time, this estate was divided, and by the time of the 1855 Classification, had been separated into the estates of Château Rauzan-Gassies, Château Rauzan-Ségla, Château Desmirail, and Château Marquis de Terme.

Region

Château Rauzan-Ségla has arguably some of the best terroir in all of Margauxure of soils, she have gently sloping vineyards and mixture of soils.  Nothing is left to chance at this estate, and the winemaking team carefully assesses the optimum terroirs to plant the vines.  Multiple clones of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot are planted in different parcels on the estate depending on the soil.  Merlot is planted on the vineyard sites with bluish clay and Cabernet Sauvignon is planted in the more graveled areas of the 79-hectare vineyard.

Winemaking

The winemaking process is meticulous. The cellar is equipped with 35 temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, each corresponding to a specific vineyard plot. This "micro-vinification" approach allows for the precise separation of distinct terroirs, facilitating nuanced blending later on. The estate employs indigenous yeasts, and since 1999, has limited the use of new oak barrels to approximately 50%. By opting for barrels with a medium toast level, the winemakers ensure that the oak influence does not obscure the charming, floral, and elegant character typical of the Margaux appellation. The wines are aged in oak barrels for about 18 to 20 months. In 1995, Rauzan-Ségla introduced its second label, "Ségla"—which accounts for half of the estate’s total production—a testament to the high quality maintained across its entire range. Unlike many other Margaux wines, Rauzan-Ségla tends to have a deeper, more robust structure and requires more time to mature; in contrast, the second label, Ségla, is more accessible in its youth, offering an immediate opportunity to enjoy the essence of a top-tier Margaux. Beyond the premier *Premier Cru* estate, Château Margaux—which stands alone at the pinnacle—Rauzan-Ségla, alongside Château Palmer and Château d'Issan, ranks as a quintessential example of a classified growth (*Cru Classé*) in the Margaux appellation.

Rating / Tasting Note

James Suckling 93 pts
This is one of the most structured Séglas for a long time with full body, a sold core of fruit and firm, chewy tannins that are polished and focused. Tight at the end. Hazelnut finish.

Wine Advocate 89-91 pts
The 2016 Segla had been blended for a month when I tasted it with the exception of 14 experimental barrels. It comprises of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 53% Merlot with 1% each of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, matured in 20% new oak. It has a very polished and quite opulent bouquet with kirsch, blackberry, a touch of glycerine and just a hint of menthol. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannin, silky smith in texture with a dash of spice on the back palate, and a compact but long finish.

Vinous 90 pts
The 2016 Ségla has a well-defined bouquet whose discreet rose petal and iris aromas lift the black cherry and blueberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and quite lively and spicy, leading into a slightly metallic finish, which I suspect will ebb with time. There is good length here. An elegant and quite persistent Margaux. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting.
