Alias Croizet Bages

Second wine of Fifth Growths Grand Cru Classe
Alias Croizet-Bages, “otherwise called” in Latin, comes mainly from the young vines of the property intended, in a few years, to produce the great wine.

Vinified with the same care as the great wine, Alias Croizet-Bages is aged for 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels. The delicate gilding of its label illustrates the property's new facilities, as a nod to the future of the Chateau.

History

The origin of the name Chateau Croizet-Bages dates back to the 17th century when the Croizet brothers, an emblematic dynasty of the Medoc landscape, founded this estate in the heart of the Pauillac appellation. Through their knowledge and exceptional know-how, they created a vineyard prestigious by purchasing plots throughout the appellation. In 1853, the famous Calve family bought the property. Wine merchants in Bordeaux, they never stopped raising the notoriety of their vintage. In 1855, Chateau Croizet-Bages was elevated to the rank of 5th Grand Cru Classe in the imperial classification. And, for the quality of its wines, the property once again distinguished itself during the universal exhibitions of 1878 and 1889, as evidenced by the medals which adorn the label.

Severely hit by the major illnesses of the early 20th century and the successive bankruptcies of its owners, Chateau Croizet-Bages experienced a difficult period until its purchase in 1942 by Mr. Paul Quie. A merchant in Paris, this great wine enthusiast knows how to glimpse all the lost nobility of this Grand Cru Classe whose vineyard extends over 55 hectares. Paul Quie recreates, little by little, an exceptional terroir with plots already planted with vines during the imperial classification of 1855, even at the risk of reducing the surface area of his vineyard. So when it disappeared in 1968, the vineyard comprised 30 hectares centered around the famous hamlet of Bages.

By taking over management of the property, his son, Jean-Michel, will promote this terroir. Under the influence of this man of character and conviction, the property is undergoing a vast renovation program, including the modernization of production spaces and the complete replanting of the vineyard. This began after the 1969 harvest, when he made the decision to uproot half of the vineyard in one year. The years that followed allowed our teams to design the modern vineyard of today.

In 2000, his children, Anne-Françoise and Jean-Philippe, decided to join the family properties. For 20 years now, they have continued the development of the Chateau by perpetuating the fundamental work carried out by previous generations. The selection of grape varieties and the division of plots thus make it possible to fine-tune

Terroir & Vinification

In one piece, the 30 hectares that make it up are located on one of the most famous hilltops of the Pauillac appellation, around the hamlet of Bages.

Every day, our teams work to shape this terroir with respect to express the different facets of its personality. Each planted plot is worked independently of the others according to its age, its grape variety and the desired result in the final blend. Composed of deep gravel and gravelly sand, the soils favor natural drainage, ensuring the concentration of the grapes. From dawn until sunset, the clusters benefit from beautiful sunshine which ensures the optimal maturity of the various emblematic grape varieties of the region. Planted mainly in Cabernet Sauvignon (58%), our plots are also composed of Merlot (39%) and a touch of Petit Verdot (3%).

The care taken for the health of the plants and the vitality of the soil thus perpetuates this historic vineyard. The virtuous farming practices carried out at Chateau Croizet-Bages, certified High Environmental Value (HVE), are part of a global environmental approach, redesigned in favor of viticulture of the future.
