Second Wine Of Grand Cru Classe in Haut Medoc since 1855
Vineyard management in sustainable farming
Wine Spectator”The originality of the Haut Batailley terroir comes from its location south of the Pauillac appellation, on the border of Saint Julien. The influence of this neighborhood is felt in this vintage, where we find grace, charm, delicacy, synonymous with unusual femininity in Pauillac. This harmonious complexity gives this wine a beautiful character and a lot of personality”
The know how of the Cazes family, owner of Chateau Lynch Bages
Construction of a new winery
An exceptional geographical situation for a Pauillac wine
The history of Chateau Haut Batailley joined that of the Borie family in 1930, when it acquired the domain of Batailley. However, it was not until 1940 that the vineyard was split in two and the Batailley and Haut Batailley Castles were born. It is then François Xavier Borie who exploited the property in renting until 2017. In March of this year, the Cazes family, owner of Chateau Lynch Bages, acquires Chateau Haut Batailley, Grand Cru Classé 1855 in Pauillac, near the Des Brest – Borie family. A transmission between two families firmly rooted in the Medocan and Pauillac landscape for several generations.
The specificity of this Chateau's terroir lies in its location. Even if the property is on the Pauillac appellation, it is at the limit of the Saint Julien appellation, which brings a certain femininity, a rare quality for a Pauillac. The vineyard area in production is 22 hectares and the grape variety is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is 35 years old. The management of the vineyard is reasoned. The tillage is exclusively mechanical with the plowing, the grape harvest is exclusively manual. A double sort is organized on vibrating table before and after destacking. The vatting is long during the vinification since it lasts about 3 weeks. In order to improve the quality of winemaking and preservation, an extensive investment program was carried out with the construction of a new winery and a new winery.
Haut Batailley Verso the second wine of the property, was launched by the Cazes family. The wine offers notes of black fruit, displays freshness, aromatic depth and elegance, and can be enjoyed from its early years onwards
