Winery

Established in 1731, Bouchard Pere & Fils, now in its ninth generation, is one of Burgundy's oldest and leading wineries. It was purchased in 1995 by Joseph Henriot, the owner of Henriot Champagne, William Fever, and Villa Ponciago in Fleurie, Beaujolais.

The total area of vineyards exceeds 200 hectares. Compared to the equally renowned Louis Jadot (which owns 150 hectares), Bouchard boasts 50 more hectares, truly making it the most important wine group in Burgundy.

These include 12 Grand Crus, including the finest Montrachet, and 74 Premier Crus, including this, Meursault's finest, Les Perrières.

Region

Pommard, nestled between Beaune and Volnay, is a renowned wine-producing village in France's Côte de Beaune region. Within the region, only red wines primarily made from Pinot Noir are officially recognized. Pommard boasts many prestigious Premier Cru vineyards. In early 2012, the Pommard appellation submitted a proposal to the National Institute of Appellations of Origin (INAO) to upgrade the Rugiens and Epenots Premier Cru vineyards to Grand Cru status.

Ronsard, a critic for the French Gastronomic Encyclopedia, once said of Pommard: "It is simply amazing that such a small plot of land can produce such delicious wine!" He then wrote in his book: "Pommard wine is the finest wine from the world-renowned wine region of Burgundy. It is rich, delicious, and lingers on the palate, revealing the demeanor of a general."

Winemaking

Hand-picked, the fruit is carefully removed from the lower-quality berries. The pressing is done in two stages: the first juice is squeezed out, followed by a two-hour cycle. The length of oak barrel aging varies depending on the vintage, ranging from ten to twelve months, with up to 15% of the wine being new oak.

Pommard is renowned for its powerful and richly flavored red wines, long considered the quintessential Burgundian. As early as the Middle Ages, Pommard was hailed as the "Flower of Burgundy" and a model for many wineries. French writer Victor Hugo described it as "a struggle between day and night." As early as the 19th century, the red wines produced here were known for their powerful, "tough" image. With the advancement of winemaking techniques and changing tastes, Pommard wines have become increasingly elegant in recent years, combining power and finesse.
