The Roty family has been involved in winemaking since 1710, during the reign of Louis XIV. Joseph Roty, the tenth generation of the family, took over the domaine in the late 1960s, inheriting three Grand Cru vineyards from his grandfather: Charmes-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, and Griotte-Chambertin. Mazis-Chambertin and Charmes-Chambertin, produced in good years, are truly impeccable. It is Joseph's talent and ability that have made Domaine Joseph Roty a leading winery in Burgundy.

Gevrey Chambertin is a renowned village in the Côte de Nuits region of Burgundy, France. Located south of Dijon, it borders the flat, open Saone plain to the east and is one of Burgundy's finest red wine-producing regions. Among the Burgundy villages, its wines are full-bodied, solidly structured, darker in color, and possess a strong oak-based flavor.

Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest village on the Cote de Nuits, covering over 500 hectares. It boasts nine Grand Crus, totaling 87.28 hectares, and 26 Premier Crus, totaling 80.52 hectares. Some of these Premier Crus, such as Clos Saint-Jacques, are of exceptional quality, surpassing many Grand Crus.

The average age of the vines in Joseph Roty's vineyards is over 60 years old. However, the oldest vineyard in Charmes-Chambertin, with over 70% planted after the phylloxera outbreak in 1880, is considered the oldest in the Côte d'Or. The vines in both the Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards are over a century old, and the average yield is kept to a low 26 hectolitres per hectare, a rare achievement in Burgundy.

Once again subtle but not invisible wood is present on the exuberantly spicy and earthy aromas of black cherry and a whiff of the sauvage. There is good density to the intense and well-detailed medium-bodied flavors that flash a bracing salinity on the sour cherry pit-inflected, long and balanced finale where a touch of austerity slowly emerges. This is a very fine Gevrey villages and worth considering.
