Throughout the 18th century powerful,well-connected and ambitious owners drove Haut-Bailly to new heights, including Christophe Lafaurie de Monbadon and his son Laurent who went on to become Mayor of Bordeaux in 1805.In 1872, Alcide Bellot des Minières acquired the estate and constructed the imposing, stone chateau building that remains to this day. He pioneered a precise, science-driven approach to viticulture, becoming a figure of legend widely known as the 'King of Vintners'. Thanks to Alcide's incredible drive, Haut-Bailly experienced a remarkable golden age, commanding the same prices as the First Growths: Lafite, Latour, Margaux andHaut-Brion. Following Alcide’s death, Haut-Bailly experienced a period of instability, regularly changing hands up until 1955.Nonetheless, the value and quality of its wines were never called into question, leading naturally to the classification of the property as a ‘CruClassé de Graves’ in 1953.The purchase of Haut-Bailly in 1955 byDaniel Sanders, a Belgian negociant, opened up a new era. Daniel and his son,Jean, recomposed the vineyard, renovated the winery and took pains to selectonly grapes from the best vines for their grand vin. They succeeded in giving the wines a unique style and reputation, and Haut-Bailly recovered its image asa great wine on the international marketplace.

The Haut-Bailly vineyard is established on one of the highest ridges on the left bank of the Garonne, with particularly good drainage.
Rooted in a soil of sand mixed with clay gravel from a Tertiary landslide, the vineyard offers an incomparable patchwork of plots suited to the needs of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carménère.
As for the subsoil, which is rich in falun (petrified fossilised stones and shells), this is where the vines draw the minerals and trace elements they need to produce rich aromas and freshness. Thanks to this terroir, its geographical location, the particularities of its hillside, its exposure and the unique heritage of its oldest vines (some of which are up to 120 years old), the vineyard produces grapes of great finesse that give Haut-Bailly wines their signature character.

Made of concrete or stainless steel, the vats are all truncated cone-shaped, with double insulated walls. With a capacity of between 50 and 200 hectolitres, they are sized to suit the plot-by-plot harvest. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in these vats, at a controlled temperature of 26-28°C, with gentle pump overs. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels and stainless steel vats.

This second wine of Château Haut-Bailly offers a softer reflection of the power of the top wine. Generous tannins are already integrating with the rich fruits that come through strongly. The juicy blackberry character to this wine shows concentration. Drink from 2024.

The 2016 La Parde de Haut-Bailly, matured in 30% new oak, has a strict, pencil-lead-infused bouquet that demands a little coaxing from the glass. I appreciate the delineation of this second wine, which is quite focused, with a light marine aroma. The medium-bodied palate exerts gentle grip. Finely structured with just a touch of cracked black pepper, this builds in the mouth to quite a linear, grippy finish that suggests that it will last longer than many might afford it. Excellent.
