Winery

The Cave de Ribeauville, the first cooperative in France, was founded in 1895. In the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian war, in response to the crisis, 44 Alsatian winegrowing families decided to unite their harvest around a common project. Forerunners throughout the vineyards, they organized a wine cooperative in the pretty village of Ribeauville on the Alsace Wine Route.

Our 245-hectare vineyard is concentrated 5km north and 8km south of the village of Ribeauvillé. Situated on a major geological fault, it offers a wide variety of soils.

Region

Alsace is located in northeastern France, between the Rhine River and the Vosges Mountains. The winding Rhine River has become the natural border between Germany and France.

Alsace is mainly divided into three parts, namely Alsace AOC, Alsace Grand Cru AOC, and Cremant d’ Alsace. The Alsace AOC was established in 1962, accounting for about 70% of the local production, most of which is white wine. The Alsace Grand Cru AOC was established in 1975, and the number of grand crus was added in 1983, 1992 and 2007. At present, Alsace has 51 grand crus, and their production accounts for only 4% of the total production of Alsace.

Winemaking

The Grand Cru Gloeckelberg, mainly located in Rodern with a small part in Saint-Hippolyte, has sloping hillsides facing south and south-east, creating a funnel effect for air circulation. Shaped by tectonic stresses to the west of the Vosges fault, this terroir has marked relief and fault rejections. The soil of Gloeckelberg is mainly composed of granite. At the top, schistose and sandstone debris mingle with granite, resulting in a low useful water reserve, while at the bottom of the slopes, the accumulation of colluvium favours a better water supply. The microclimate of central Alsace, sheltered by the Vosges mountains, means that the region receives less rainfall. With rainfall of between 600 and 700 mm per year, the Gloeckelberg enjoys ideal exposure, steep slopes, no obstacles to the east and moderate altitude, creating excellent thermal conditions for the early ripening of the Grand Cru grapes.

The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand. Whole bunches are pressed in pneumatic presses to avoid any crushing and to respect the raw material as much as possible. The juices are separated to optimise the quality of our wines. After static settling, the wines ferment under temperature control at around 21°-22°, and are then matured on fine lees for 9 to 11 months. After filtration, the wines are bottled all at once and matured in our cellars for a minimum of 1 to 3 years.
Rating / Tasting Note

This Pinot Gris Grand Cru Gloeckelberg has an intense nose with typical smoky notes underlined by a touch of candied fig. Full-bodied and structured on the palate, with a well-balanced finish.
