Hemel en Aarde

最有潛力媲美布根地的南非產區

Hemel-en-Aarde, South Africa's most promising wine region to rival Burgundy, is renowned for its high-quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Located on the cool coast of Walker Bay in the Western Cape region, influenced by the Atlantic Ocean's cold currents, it boasts a unique microclimate that produces elegant, well-structured, and high-acidity wines, earning it the nickname "South Africa's Burgundy Answer."

Hemel en Aarde's cool climate allows for a long growing season, ideal for crafting fine, complex Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, often compared to top Burgundy wines.

It is subdivided into three sub-regions: Hemel en Aarde valley, Upper Hemel en Aardevalley, and Hemel en Aarde Ridge.

Hemel en Aarde valley, close to the Atlantic coastline, is where the region's earliest vineyards were planted. The Sauvignon Blanc here is exceptionally pure, with a pronounced minerality and a long finish. Pinot Noir, on the other hand, has a lower alcohol content, a texture closer to Pinot Noir, and a bright acidity.

Hemel en Aardevalley is the largest of the three appellations. It produces very delicate and restrained wines; its Chardonnay exhibits Pliny-Montrachet style, while its Pinot Noir boasts rich fruit aromas.

Hemel en Aarde Ridge, the smallest and furthest from the ocean, typically produces grapes that ripen later than the other two appellations, resulting in exceptionally pure and refreshing wines.

The appellation is known for its cool climate, with cool, continuous sea breezes providing ample conditions for grape ripening, bringing freshness and vibrancy, creating an ideal natural environment for grape growth. The average temperature in February is 20.3⁰C, and the average rainfall is 722mm. The soil types within the appellation are highly diverse, including sandstone, shale, and granite. The soil has a high clay content, ranging from 25% to 55%, very similar to the soil of the Côte d'Or in Burgundy. This clay contains many minerals that play a crucial role in grape growth.

Renowned wineries including Storm Wines, Crystallum (considered a boutique winery with DRC standards), and Hamilton Russell are guarantees of the region's quality..
