Chateau Poujeaux 2020 (375ml)《WC Selection - FH009D》

The name ‘Château Poujeaux’ first appearedin 1806 but Terre de Poujeaux, situated in Moulis-en-Médoc, had existed sincethe Middle Ages. At that time it belonged to Latour Saint Mambert, now ChâteauLatour, 1er Grand Cru Classé, Pauillac. During the 19th Century, the estateproduced its first wines and became truly independent.

Previously divided up into three entities, it was only at the end of the 20thCentury and thanks to the Theil family that Poujeaux’s structure and size wererestored. The estate regained its historic form in 1956, unified with 100hectares of which 70 hectares under vine. In 2008, the estate was acquired bythe Cuvelier family, already owners of the famous Clos Fourtet, 1er Grand CruClassé, Saint-Émilion.

Its pretty aromas of wild blackberries, violets, milk chocolate, and licorice, along with its medium-to-full-bodied profile and firm, creamy tannins. This Bordeaux wine from the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation is noted for its attractive fruit and structure, which will likely continue to develop with age.

Poujeaux is a wine that I often hold up as classic example of what the Médoc can achieve, and here again it's a huge success. It has a beautiful nose, with vibrant and well extracted brambly dark fruits on the palate - but not so much that it feels like it's pushing too hard. It's an architectural wine, a more classic take on the vintage, but for me this is where the money is in Moulis.

This is a big-hearted wine, ripe with both black-plum flavors and generous tannins. At this stage the structure is prominent, but with the weight of the fruits, the wine will balance out full, ripe and ready to drink from 2026
