Owner Beretta - Gussalli Family

HISTORY
Castello di Radda was founded in 2003 thanks to the Beretta family’s investments and passion for the land through the Agricole Gussalli Beretta group. Castello di Radda is part of a project that promotes Italian wine, stretching from Lombardy to Abruzzo, with four top wineries: Lo Sparviere in Franciacorta; Orlandi Conticci Ponno at the foot of Gran Sasso, a traditional zone for Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOCG and Trebbiano; Fortemasso in Monforte d’Alba, a principle zone for Barolo DOCG; and the brand new Steinhauserhof in Alto Adige, acquired in 2017.
Innovative and rooted in the territory
The goal is simple: to create an avant-garde winery, modern and classic at the same time, innovative yet rooted in one of Italy’s most ancient and worldrenowned winemaking territories. The challenge is to express the territory of Radda in Chianti, working with what nature gives and exalting the extraordinary terroir of Chianti Classico through cultivating native varieties and utilizing traditional methods. Production is based on precision in the vineyards, rigor in the winery, and respect for the environment and its primary materials.
An indigenous choice
While the foundations of the winery are built – a project that is integrated with the territory and headed by the architect Spartaco Mori – the work of promoting the terroir of Radda in Chianti begins. The best plots of land are selected and the varieties that can best express the terroir are identified for cultivation. Above all is Sangiovese, an indigenous grape and the leading variety of Chianti Classico, cultivated since ancient Roman times; Canaiolo and Colorino, other native varieties of the zone, used in blends with Sangiovese; and Merlot, the
international variety that found its land of election in Tuscany, by now a traditional grape used in Bordeaux blends known as Super Tuscans.
Organic vineyard management
Construction of the winery was completed in 2009, the year in which Castello di Radda hired Maurizio Castelli as consulting enologist. Castelli is one of the world’s top experts in Sangiovese, and Castello di Radda’s choice in him underlines their focus in producing 100% Sangiovese Chianti Classico wines of excellent quality. In 2010, the winery’s important wine Castello di Radda Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2007 received Three Glasses, Tre Bicchieri, by Gambero Rosso’s guide Vini d’Italia. As the company strengthens their presence among the big names of high quality in Italy and abroad, 2017 marks the beginning of a new adventure. Beginning this year, all property vineyards begin organic conversion, with the final goal of making Castello di Radda a 100% organic winery.
WINERY
Castello di Radda devotes a large amount of effort towards quality in the vineyards, conducting work in the winery in such a way that preserves this quality until bottling. Yet here, too, the difference is in the strict sorting of the grapes. Castello di Radda conducts three quality selections of the grapes that arrive in the winery:
1. Thinning the grapes: This supports the uniformity of the grapes, qualitatively and quantitatively. It allows for productive balance and excellent quality.
2. Selection during harvest: Harvest is completely manual and separated according to zones and parcels, with only the best and perfectly ripe grapes chosen.
3. Sorting table: Before destemming and soft pressing, the grapes are subject to another hand selection, when imperfect grapes are discarded.
Attentive fermentation and extraction Castello di Radda prefers long and gentle fermentation and maceration, which can last up to a month. The goal is to use delicate extraction to optimally polymerize the tannins, making for softer, better-structured wines. These operations are done in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures.
Separate vinification
Castello di Radda separately vinifies the grapes of every vineyard and, when possible, every parcel. This separation is maintained until bottling for the varietal wines, or until the moment of assemblage for the blended wines. The wines are racked in stainless steel tanks that are specified to contain the exact amount of fermented wine they will contain; this prevents the need to top up barrels with wines from other parcels, thus mixing wines.
