HISTORY
Castello di Radda was founded in 2003 thanks to the Beretta family’s investments and passion for the land through the Agricole Gussalli Beretta group. Castello di Radda is part of a project that promotes Italian wine, stretching from Lombardy to Abruzzo, with four top wineries: Lo Sparviere in Franciacorta; Orlandi Conticci Ponno at the foot of Gran Sasso, a traditional zone for Montepulciano d’Abruzzo
DOCG and Trebbiano; Fortemasso in Monforte d’Alba, a principle zone for Barolo DOCG; and the brand new Steinhauserhof in Alto Adige, acquired in 2017.
Innovative and rooted in the territory
The goal is simple: to create an avant-garde winery, modern and classic at the same time, innovative yet rooted in one of Italy’s most ancient and worldrenowned winemaking territories. The challenge is to express the territory of Radda in Chianti, working with what nature gives and exalting the extraordinary terroir of Chianti Classico through cultivating native varieties and utilizing traditional methods. Production is based on precision in the vineyards, rigor in the winery, and respect for the environment and its primary materials.
An indigenous choice
While the foundations of the winery are built – a project that is integrated with the territory and headed by the architect Spartaco Mori – the work of promoting the terroir of Radda in Chianti begins. The best plots of land are selected and the varieties that can best express the terroir are identified for cultivation. Above all is Sangiovese, an indigenous grape and the leading variety of Chianti Classico, cultivated since ancient Roman times; Canaiolo and Colorino, other native varieties of the zone, used in blends with Sangiovese; and Merlot, the international variety that found its land of election in Tuscany, by now a traditional grape used in Bordeaux blends known as Super Tuscans.

VINEYARD MANAGEMENT
The complexity of the climate and territory of Radda in Chianti present a constant challenge for vineyard management. The vines’ development and growth are looked after attentively and meticulously. Each plant and vineyard is given the best conditions and care in order to express the potential that is already inherent from nature.
Quality and careful agricultural practices
Castello di Radda chooses quality over quantity in agricultural production, with low yields and constant manual interventions attuned to bringing out the best in
the grapes. Every parcel of land is identified according to the particularities and needs of the soil, plants, and microclimate—characteristics that help contribute to a personalized and precise intervention, day after day: from fertilization to pruning, from thinning the leaves and grapes, from between-row green cover to the harvest. Everything is carried out with one focus: to never force the development of the plant, but to support its natural cycle by giving it optimum conditions that will produce healthy, ripe, and polyphenolically-balanced grapes.

Zoning, parceling, and consistent quality
Zoning and parceling are the cornerstones of Castello di Radda’s agriculture. They define the quality of the vineyards and unique characteristics of each, given
by nature. From the first harvest, Castello di Radda has always conducted separate vinifications not only of single vineyards but, where possible, of single plots from within each vineyard. The result is the ability to check the quality in the closest detail, from single vineyard row to the bottle, plant by plant. Parceling and the segmented study of the vines—which change every year according to the season and climate conditions—help with understanding the needs of each plant so that they can develop with consistency. This important work is at the base of every vinification of superior quality.

Conversion to organic
The rigor and precision in managing the vineyards is mirrored by the attention that Castello di Radda gives the surrounding environment. Beginning in 2017, all vineyard properties will be converted to organic agriculture. This means the total elimination of chemicals and invasive practices in favor of 100% natural treatments and, at the same time, an even higher and more meticulous attention in managing the vineyards.
