Winery

Domaine de Chevalier is located in Pessac-Léognan, a region in the northern part of the Graves borough that only became its own AOC in 1987. Domaine de Chevalier was designated a Grand Cru Classé de Graves in the 1953 Graves classification. The Graves classification grades red and white wines separately, and Domaine de Chevalier received Grands Crus Classés status for both red and white wines, a distinction only achieved by 14 wineries.

The winery has a long history, with documented records dating back to the 17th century. By 1865, there are detailed records of Jean Ricard beginning vineyard planting. He is considered the estate's founder. His son-in-law, Gabriel Beaumartin, subsequently managed the estate for 40 years before the Bernard family acquired it in 1983. During this period, the estate had only three owners, with Olivier Bernard currently the current owner.

The Bernard family is a dominant force in the spirits market and a major wine merchant specializing in renowned Bordeaux wines. Domaine de Chevalier was their first winery. In 1993, Olivier Bernard was invited to manage Domaine de la Solitude. In 2009, he was invited to manage Château Lespault-Martillac, also in Paccac-Léognan. Château Lespault-Martillac was underperforming at the time, and the owner hoped Olivier Bernard would help improve the winery. Olivier Bernard lived up to his expectations and has further developed the winery. In 2006, the Bernard family became a shareholder in Château Guiraud, entering the sweet white wine market. Château Guiraud, an 1855 Grand Cru classé of Sauternes, undoubtedly brought the family to a new level of success.

In 2011, Olivier Bernard launched an ambitious project, Clos des Lunes, to produce a superior dry white wine in the Sauternes region, renowned for its sweet wines.

Region

Château Chevalier occupies over 100 hectares, 61 of which are dedicated to vineyards. Surrounded by pine forests and a winding river, the estate boasts an exceptional ecological environment, earning it the nickname "Graves' Secret Garden." The lush trees surrounding the estate also serve as a climate regulator, protecting the vines from extreme weather conditions. Currently, 55 hectares of the estate's vineyards are planted with red grape varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot; the remaining 6 hectares are planted with white grapes, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The soil is primarily sandy and gravelly, with an average vine age of 35 years and a planting density of 10,000 vines per hectare.

Winemaking

In Chevalier's winemaking philosophy, the mission of winemaking is to faithfully reflect the characteristics of the terroir. The winery respects the differences between vintages and adjusts vineyard and cellar management accordingly. The winery is equipped with small fermentation tanks, allowing for separate vinification of fruit from different plots. For red wines, pre-fermentation typically involves a 4-6-day cold maceration to enhance the fruit's aromas. During fermentation, the wines are manually capped to soften the extraction process. The Grand Vin is aged for 14-24 months in oak barrels, with a ratio of 40% to 60% new. For the white wines, the grapes are harvested and transferred to a bladder press, where they are gently pressed by plot. After fermentation, the wines are aged on their lees to enhance their fullness, richness, smoothness, and complexity.

Rating

As to the reds, the 2016 Domaine de Chevalier is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc that saw an extended maceration, malo in barrel, and 18 months in just 35% new French oak. This deep purple-hued beauty boasts a powerful bouquet of tobacco smoke, damp earth, gravelly, rocky minerality, wood smoke, and loads of dark fruits. Full-bodied, deep, concentrated yet incredibly elegant and seamless on the palate, it’s a legendary Chevalier in the making. While I rated this as high as 99 points on one of the four separate occasions I was able to taste it, I’m being conservative with the score.

James Suckling 97 pts
Aromas of blackberries, red and dark plums, cedar and gravel, as well as red flowers and brown-leaf tea. It offers a very sleek and powerful array of ripe dark fruit and a very plush, focused and elegant bed of fresh, fine and powerful tannins. Plenty of aging potential, this is still quite tight.
