Central Valley

The Central Valley is the most important (in terms of production) wine-producing region in Chile and one of the largest wine-producing regions in Chile. 90% of the wine exported by Chile comes from here. It stretches from the Maipo Valley to the southern tip of the Maule Valley, with a length of 400 kilometers (about 250 miles), but a smaller width of about 100 kilometers. The name Central Valley is easily confused with the geographical "Central Valley", which is actually located between the Pacific coastline and the lower foothills of the Andes, stretching more than 1,000 kilometers (about 620 miles) from north to south.

Within the Central Valley production area, there are four sub-production areas, namely Maipo Valley, Rapel Valley, Curico Valley and Maule Valle. Among them, Rapel Valley is divided into two producing areas, namely Cachapoal Valley and Colchagua Valley. Among these sub-regions, Maipo Valley is the most famous wine region in Chile and the cradle of Chilean wine, producing Chile's most successful export wine. Most of the vineyards in the Achapoal Valley are close to the Andes Mountains. The temperature of each vineyard varies greatly, and the soil is thin, but the wines produced are the best and the top of Chile. Wines from the Colchagua Valley often appear at the top of lists of the world's best wines, acclaimed for their full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Syrah and Malbec wines. Maule Valle, one of Chile's largest and oldest valleys, is today producing exciting, naturally balanced blends of Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec wines.

The Central Valley is home to many grape varieties, but the most planted in the region are the internationally popular Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Chile’s iconic grape variety, Carmenere, also has a place here, just as Malbec does in Mendoza. Cooler areas of the appellation are gradually developing, where winemakers are constantly experimenting with new grape varieties such as Viognier, Riesling and Gewurztraminer.

Due to the vast area, different climates and diverse soils, the wines produced in this production area are diverse in style and quality, including the top-notch Bordeaux-style wines produced in the Maipo Valley in the north (the price is relatively expensive), Maule Valley The older, traditional wines produced and more. With the widespread spread of modern winemaking techniques, emerging regions with cool climates are gaining attention, especially in the foothills of the Andes and Pacific-influenced river valleys.
