Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir 1981–2021: A true expression of heaven on earth

Hamilton Russell Vineyards – one of the most southerly wine Estates in Africa and one of the closest to the sea – pioneered viticulture and winemaking in the beautiful, cool, maritime Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation, just behind the old fishing village of Hermanus. Tim Hamilton Russell purchased the undeveloped 425-acre property in 1975, after an exhaustive search for the most southerly site on which to make South Africa’s top cool climate wines from a selection of noble varieties. His son, Anthony Hamilton Russell, who took over in 1991 (finally buying the property in 1994), narrowed the range to only Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and registered Hamilton Russell Vineyards as an Estate, committing to work only with grapes from their terroir. Today, Anthony and his wife Olive, winemaker Emul Ross, and viticulturist Johan Montgomery are completely dedicated to expressing the personality of the Hamilton Russell Vineyards terroir in their wines. Tiny yields and intense worldwide demand keep the elegant, highly individual, estate-grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in very short supply.

In a nutshell: Founded in 1975, Hamilton Russell Vineyards is a second generation family business, overseen from 1991 by Anthony and Olive Hamilton Russell. The estate pioneered the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and quality South African Pinot Noir.

The wines are, uniquely for South Africa, focused on a single estate grown Pinot Noir and a single estate grown Chardonnay with no reserves and no second labels. Both their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are regarded as New World icons with an uncannily Old World style. They are particularly successful in fine gastronomy and are listed by numerous Michelin star restaurants around the world.

Famously, the wines produced from the estate are known to bear a remarkable stylistic similarity to the very best Burgundies. The 20 parcels of Chardonnay wines are all vinified separately, and blended for consistency of aesthetic, whilst also maintaining the character of the vintage. The 9 Pinot Noir parcels give Burgundian subtlety, texture and length, a reflection of the stony, iron and clay-rich shale-derived soils on which the wines are grown.

The terroir: With a cool, maritime meso-climate, the wines are the most beautiful possible expressions of this special piece of ground unusually close to the cold South Atlantic. Extensive soil research was initiated in 1994, which identified 52 hectares of stony, iron and clay-rich, shalederived soil as optimal for the individual, origin expressive style they aim for. The soils are comparable in terms of clay content to the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. In recent years, they have focussed heavily on organic and regenerative farming and have dramatically increased soil microbial life and carbon content.

The Hamilton Russell Vineyards ‘personality’: Iconic, internationally well-known and highly respected by the sommelier community, but still an exciting word of mouth discovery wine for many consumers internationally.

翻看 Hamilton Russell 的 37 年歷史,戰績彪炳,譬如 2009 年的《Wine Spectator》 Top 100,是唯一入圍的南非酒,排名 52。

 

2003 年的 International Wine and Spirit Competition,獲得 Trophy for the Best Pinot Noir in the World,是第一次南非的 Pinot Noir 可以得到這獎項。

 

2001 年被英國酒評家 Anthony Rose 選為 Top 20 Chardonnay in the World,也是唯一能入圍的南非酒。

 

上述只是綜合了部分獎項,從中已發覺這南非酒莊是精於釀製 Pinot Noir 及 Chardonnay,這法國布根地主力出產的紅白酒。事實上,酒莊身處的 Walker Bay,距離大西洋只有 3 公里,因此清涼的海風令酒莊有着適宜種植 Pinot Noir 及 Chardonnay 的氣候。而且酒莊在 Hemel-en-Aarde Valley 的 52 公頃土地,有着極肥沃的黏土、石頭、頁岩(shale),也是適宜上述兩種葡萄的生長。
