The spirit of Lafon-Rochet
Château Lafon-Rochet is a family-owned estate to which we are all very attached. For us, every intention, every gesture counts towards the precious preservation of what we have before us: a complex and unique terroir on which our vines come to life.A constant challenge that we embrace with passion. An already existing story that we continue to tell with joy. A fine wine that blossoms with age and that we are delighted to share with others.
Inherited history
The golden façade of Château Lafon-Rochet may take you by surprise when you explore the "Departmental 2", criss-crossing some of the most well-known Médoc wineries. A bold and warm colour, just like Michel Tesseron, Basile Tesseron and their precious collaborators who live according to the rhythm of the vines equally driven by commitment and passion.“It takes great winemakers to get the best out of untamed and uncontrollable nature”. Basile Tesseron
A family estate
Château Lafon-Rochet had a succession of different owners until July 1960, when Guy Tesseron purchased it. As of that year, it became a family-run property.Today, three generations live side by side and cultivate a common passion for its land, its wines and its vines. Basile, Michel Tesseron's son, enthusiastically pursues his father's projects, across the vineyard, inside the cellars and within the Château.
From the vines to the cellar
The Médoc, a long land inlet, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde estuary, is a treasure trove for those who know how to tame its complexity. The diverse composition of its gravel, the excellent natural drainage and the more recently deposited clay, bless Lafon-Rochet with the elements that make its terroir so unique. As it takes a great terroir to make a great wine, everyone here at Lafon-Rochet works together towards preserving its rich diversity.
The vineyard is mostly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, together with small plots of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot which, for some vintages, provide pleasant suprises. The "great wine" vines are at least 35 years old; the oldest vines, some of which date back to 1938, produce less fruit, but offer greater complexity to the wines. One set to music, these grape varieties make up the estate's wines' score.
September marks the starts of the harvest. For the last 30 year, around 40 pickers have joined us annually, from a village in northern Portugal, to help harvest the fruit of a year labour. Two new vat rooms built in 2015, one with concrete vats, the orther with stainless steel ones, house the year's harvest. The wine is then aged in oak barrels for several months.
Chateau Lafon Rochet
Château Lafon-Rochet is a winery in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of the Bordeaux region of France. The wine produced here was classified as one of ten Quatrièmes Crus (Fourth Growths) in the historic Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. The Chateau has 111 acres (45 ha) planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Les Pelerins de Lafon-Rochet
Les Pèlerins de Lafon-Rochet, the second wine of the property, is an easy and more affordable wine.
Coming from the youngest vines, we could call it a wine of approach, a kind of initiation before the great wine! It is drunk faster, it is useless to wait decades before tasting it.
Fresh and simple, he nevertheless enjoys the same care as his elder.
