The name “Astrolabe” is derived from the name of the ship in which Dumont d'Urville discovered Marlborough in 1827, “L'Astrolabe”, which means the astrolabe, a well known navigational instrument. Astrolabe', which means astrolabe, is a well known navigational tool. Owner Simon Waghorn named the winery “Astrolabe” to link it to the history of Marlborough and to embrace the spirit of adventure.

Simon Waghorn, the man at the heart of Stellar Plate, began his winemaking career in South Australia, then moved to Gisborne to work on the East Coast of New Zealand, before taking on the role of Winemaker at Whitehaven Winery in Marlborough, where he was born. Starting in 1996, he and his wife, Paul Davonport and Sally Lewis decided to start their own winery together and established Astrolabe Winery.

Marlborough produces wines of vivid texture and aromatic intensity. Sauvignon Blanc, with its explosive tropical fruit flavors, green herbaceousness and powerful acidity, is the signature wine of the region (and of New Zealand), but other varietals are also thriving in this wine paradise.

Sauvignon blanc is widely considered by thewine drinkers of the world to reach its pinnacle of potential in Marlborough.The Astrolabe Province Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is made from grapes grownacross three Marlborough sub-regions: the Wairau Valley, the Awatere Valley andthe Kēkerengū Coast. The blend of sites, soils and aspects within this winegives it great complexity, reflecting both the capability of the region as awhole and my own palate. I have sought out sites across the whole Marlboroughwine region, looking for different soils and climates and carefully managingcropping levels so that I have the best fruit to work from.

We machine harvest the grapes at night orin the cool parts of the day to preserve the purity and intensity of flavours.In the winery, I take great care to handle the fruit in a way which allows theflavours and aromas of the region to come through. At the end of the growingseason, I look at all the wines I have made from the various sub-regions andtry to put together the most complete and balanced, integrated version of aMarlborough sauvignon blanc.

I blend to suit what I think is Astrolabe’sstyle, which reflects what I’ve learnt as a winemaker and drinker over theyears. My style is dry, expressive and elegantly balanced. For me it is aboutgetting a lovely sense of fully developed green spectrum flavours from allthese different sites and putting them in a glass in a way that is well-styledand elegant. My Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc always presents with ripe greenflavours like passionfruit, blackcurrant leaf and gooseberry. In the palate, itis full and round and finishes dry and lingering.

This is a drier style of sauvignon blanc,acidity kept nicely in balance with the alcohol and the very little residualsugar that is there, so it’s all about how all these things come together tomake a pleasurable whole. I craft my wines so that nothing stands out as onesingular spike, instead revealing a lovely layering of flavours and aromas thatpeople can keep finding as they spend time savouring the glass.
