The name “Astrolabe” is derived from the name of the ship in which Dumont d'Urville discovered Marlborough in 1827, “L'Astrolabe”, which means the astrolabe, a well known navigational instrument. Astrolabe', which means astrolabe, is a well known navigational tool. Owner Simon Waghorn named the winery “Astrolabe” to link it to the history of Marlborough and to embrace the spirit of adventure.

Simon Waghorn, the man at the heart of Stellar Plate, began his winemaking career in South Australia, then moved to Gisborne to work on the East Coast of New Zealand, before taking on the role of Winemaker at Whitehaven Winery in Marlborough, where he was born. Starting in 1996, he and his wife, Paul Davonport and Sally Lewis decided to start their own winery together and established Astrolabe Winery.

Marlborough Pinot Noir

Marlborough produces wines of vivid texture and aromatic intensity. Sauvignon Blanc, with its explosive tropical fruit flavors, green herbaceousness and powerful acidity, is the signature wine of the region (and of New Zealand), but other varietals are also thriving in this wine paradise.

Pinot Noir has also taken root in Marlborough and is making its mark on the New Zealand scene, with Marlborough Pinot Noir showcasing the purity of the region's fruit flavors with extra layers of minerality and exotic spice. The Southern Valleys produce full-bodied Pinot Noir with spicy depth, while the river gravels of Awatere produce vibrant Pinot Noir with savory and herbal notes. The result is a Pinots that is both powerful and elegant, with this diversity of cultures.

Fully aged in French oak barrels, which bring a toasty note, on lees brings more texture and interest, not only with beautiful fruit flavors, but also through special terroir and winemaking techniques that add depth to the wine, making it more appealing, yet still perfect with food. The winery strives to maintain the finesse, softness and finish of the wine, as well as the natural and vibrant fruit flavors, combined with good acidity and an easy-going texture.

A pure and yummy pinot with sliced strawberry and strawberry pie as well as dried citrus. It’s medium-bodied with round and dusty tannins and a flavorful finish. Solid pinot. Drink and enjoy. Screw cap.

The 2020 Marlborough Pinot Noir is a silky, supple little thing, with red apple skins, strawberry, red cherry and hints of exotic spice (sumac, nutmeg, cinnamon, etc.) on the palate. The finish is firm and a little chewy (not a pejorative comment), but what this offers is classy and complete. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
