Aultmore is located in Keith, Speyside, Scotland, UK. It is now owned by John Dewar & Sons. Ltd, a subsidiary of the famous spirits merchant Bacardi. "Aultmore" means "big burn" in Gaelic, and here it refers to the water source of the distillery - Auchinderran Burn.
Aultmore was founded by Alexander Edward between 1895 and 1896, and production began in 1897. At that time, Alexander was still the owner of the Benrinnes distillery, and together with Oban, which he acquired in 1898, he was very powerful. Unfortunately, the whiskey boom of the late 19th century ended shortly after Aultmore was completed, demand for whiskey plummeted, and Aultmore closed for a few years. It was not until around 1904 that Aultmore reopened, but soon after, due to the impact of World War I, there was a shortage of barley and other grains, so Aultmore closed again during the First World War.
In 1923, John Dewar & Sons. Ltd acquired Yamo, which in turn was acquired by Distillers Company Limited (DCL) in 1925. In 1930, Aultmore was transferred to the management of DCL's newly formed subsidiary, Scottish Malt Distillers. Under the management of the new company, Aultmore was rebuilt and upgraded in 1971, and the number of stills in the factory was expanded from two to four. In 1986, Guinness acquired DCL, and in 1997 Guinness merged with Grand Metropolitan Ltd. to form the Diageo Group. The following year, Diageo sold Aultmore to John Dewar & Sons. Ltd. Since then, Aultmore has returned to the hands of John Dewar & Sons. Ltd.
The whiskey produced by Alexander is known locally as "a nip of the Buckie Road" and has a fresh and elegant style, mainly due to its water source - Auchinderran Burn. Auchinderran Burn is located in the smoky Foggie Moss. The rich gorse and heather in the area have a filtering effect on the river water, making the water purer and softer. Initially it only existed to supply the base liquor for blended whiskey, and few people in the general public had tasted it (it mainly provided the base liquor for Dewar's blended whiskey). It was not until 2004 that it was first launched as an independent identity.
The 18-year-old Aultmore was launched in 2015. It is like walking in the Scottish mountains, with an aroma that is similar to the ups and downs of the mountains and forests. You can feel the fragrance of bananas, pear and other scents approaching like a mist.
The finish is like that of a Scottish pastry, with sweet, spicy aromas slowly emerging to tantalize the taste buds and nose. It also has a smooth taste.
