As the third oldest distillery in the world and the oldest continuously operating distillery in the United States, Buffalo Traces Distillery is the birthplace of bourbon and is considered by many to be the symbol of American whiskey.

The journey has not been without its challenges. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, bourbon faced a decline as vodka and other types of liquor grew in popularity. It was during this time that Buffalo Traces Distillery’s then-head distiller, Elmer T. Lee, had a vision to create a premium bourbon that could stand up to any aged spirit.

His approach was to pull the finest barrels from the distillery's metal warehouses to create the world's first single-barrel bourbon, where all the bourbon in a bottle comes from a single barrel. Called Blanton's, the wine was first sold to the public in 1984 and named after the mid-20th century winemaker. He then toured the world with his bourbon, introducing the world to what great bourbon was. This sparked the globalization of the category and ignited its latest boom, one we’re still reveling in today.
