Brovia Estate is a historic winery located in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, a shining star that has recently garnered widespread attention and acclaim from international wine critics. Since its founding in 1863, the winery has continuously acquired some of Barolo's finest vineyards, including Rocche, Villero, and Garblèt Sue (in Bricco Fiasco) in Castiglione Falletto, and Ca' Mia in Serralunga d'Alba. Each of these plots is a single vineyard, showcasing its distinct character and serving as the winery's flagship wines.

These different plots exhibit varying soil compositions, ranging from heavier clay to more friable limestone. Brovia, as meticulous growers, prioritizes capturing the unique characteristics of each soil. They analyze the soil every two years to ensure the balance of its various components. Since 2010, they have implemented full organic farming.

Another commendable aspect of the winery is its tradition of valuing education, passed down through generations. In 1953, after the war, the founder's grandsons, brothers Giacinto and Raffaele, took over the family business, respectively as winemaker and viticulturalist, overseeing various aspects of the winery. After Raffaele's death, the fourth generation, Giacinto's daughters Cristina and Elena, joined the family business, one specializing in winemaking and the other in viticulture, ensuring the winery's future stability.
The winery utilizes traditional methods, using native yeasts. The wine is aged for two years in large Slavonian and French oak barrels (approximately 3,000 liters) and is unfiltered before bottling. It then continues to age in bottle for 18-24 months before release. Bottle aging allows for further development of the aromas, giving them a unique character.

Aromas of praline, honey, orange peel and cherries follow through to a full body, chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Beautiful intensity and power.

The 2015 Barolo Villero offers richness and darkness with fruit from Castiglione Falletto, and it's one of the more intense wines I tasted within this selection. The Villero is a balanced and polished Barolo that opens to nicely integrated fruit and spice tones, expertly interwoven and united. The wine has a beautiful entry to the palate. Indeed, this pretty wine presented a united front, with seamless and graceful integration.

The 2015 Barolo Villero is a very pretty, mid-weight wine. Silky tannins andbeautifully expressive aromatics give the Villero considerable finesse. Onthe palate, though, the 2015 is far less expressive. That is not entirelysurprising, as the Villero often needs a few years to truly blossom. Sweetfloral and spice notes start to open with time in the glass, but the Villero isnot an especially forthcoming 2015 Barolo.
