Chateau Charmail is a Cru Bourgeois in the Haut-Médoc association of Bordeaux, named after the famous 16th century French nobleman Charmail. Named after the famous 16th century French nobleman Charmail, Olivier purchased the estate in 1982 and ran it for 30 years. In 2008, Bernard Halluin joined Olivier as co-manager. In 2003, it was upgraded to "Cru Bourgeois Supérieur" in the official classification of Cru Bourgeois.

It is one of the most noteworthy of the Cru Bourgeois, generally described by critics as good and consistent, and Robert Parker, who considers it to be a fifth growth, says that Chateau Charmail has emerged as one of the superstars of the Haut-Medoc.

The winery has 30 hectares of vineyards, 45% of which are planted with Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, and the remaining 5% Petit Verdo, with vines averaging 30 years old, and gravel and clay soils. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, and the harvested grapes are macerated at a low temperature of 5 degrees Celsius for 15 days, fermented on dry ice for 7 to 10 days, and then macerated and fermented for another week, with the alcoholic fermentation temperature controlled at 25 to 30 degrees Celsius, and then put into French oak barrels for 12 months after fermentation to mature, and then re-oaked in 28% of the barrels every year.
