A Story
Origins
The Donissan de Citran family ruled this estate in the 13th century until 1832, when the last heir had to sell the estate to Mr. Clauzel. This rich, ambitious businessman defined the property’s boundaries and gave Château Citran to prominence among the Medoc estates.

Resurrection
The Miailhe family bought the property in 1945 and undertook a renovation programme until 1987. Then, a Japanese group acquired the property and made major investments. This marks the resurrection of this great growth of Médoc !

The age of reason
In 1996, the Merlaut family, a major actor of the Bordeaux wine industry, took over Citran. They kept on increasing the quality of growth and developed its renown while respecting its history. Highly lauded, the Château is designated a historical monument heritage in 2012.

A Soil
A sustainable agriculture
At Citran, we pay a particular attention to vineyard observation. A great renovation programme has been conducted for several years, have enabled some of the parcels to benefit from a better amount of sunshine by means of rows reorientation . The vineyard, more than 100ha wide, comprises two large parcels : one around the Château, and the other, a little further up, surrounds the village.
Major plantation works have been conducted.

A reasonable maintenance
Each plot benefits from a specific treatment appropriate for its environment. Some are grown the traditional way: the soil is worked on mechanically and the phytosanitary treatments are standard. Others are covered with sowed vegetation every to spaces between rows, so as to improve the soil's layout. Eventually, one third of the vineyard is organically grown.

A respect for the vineyard
We adapt our working techniques to the environmental constraints, and not the other way round. At Citran, works in the vineyards are conducted in close collaboration with our winemakers. They are endowed with ancestral knowledge, but they also keep themselves up to date with the latest innovations in viticulture.
They work all year round. They are “our hands”.

🏅 James Suckling 90 points (Vintage 2010):

Aromas and flavors of orange peel, dried strawberries and hints of coffee. Full and chewy with a good amount of tannins and a pretty finish. Already delicious. Try in 2015.

🏅 Wine Spectator 90 points (Vintage 2010):

Ripe and engaging, with dark, juicy plum and boysenberry fruit liberally studded with anise, cocoa and tar notes that hang through the well-structured finish. Should age well in the near-term. Best from 2014 through 2022. 32,500 cases made.

🏅 Wine Advocate 89-91 points  (Neal Martin) (Vintage 2016):

The 2016 Citran has an understated bouquet that demanded some encouragement from the glass, although it eventually revealed nicely detailed black fruit tinged with cedar and graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, just the right amount of juiciness with a linear and taut, saline finish. This is a commendable follow-up to the 2015 Citran and it should give 10-15 years of pleasure.

🏅 James Suckling 92 points (Vintage 2016):

A firm and silky wine with integrated tannins and cool, fresh fruit. Medium body. Tangy and tense finish. A blend of 49 per cent merlot, 43 per cent cabernet sauvignon and eight per cent cabernet franc. Drink in 2022.
