The winery is listed as one of Robert Parker's 155 greatest wineries in the world

Bordeaux's second-class famous winery, Chateau Cos D'Estournel, Aishitu

The location is unique. The vineyard is adjacent to the first-class winery, Chateau Lafite, and the terroir is excellent.

Located at the junction of Pauillac and St-Estephe, the style combines the characteristics of the two places.

Louis Gaspard d’Estournel inherited Cos and Pomys in 1791. Deeply convinced that the terroir of the hill of Cos was exceptional, he took many risks to enhance his estate, investing massively in the acquisition of neighboring land. He would expand his vineyard from 14 to 45 hectares. Forever passionate about innovation, he introduced numerous technical improvements including the use of glass stoppers and experimented with new grape varieties.

Throughout his lifetime Louis Gaspard d’Estournel remained closely involved in the management of Cos d’Estournel. He fought endlessly to promote his estate, even if it meant having to sell it to finance his debts before acquiring it once again.
Driven and tenacious, he would acquire many plots of wines, some of which were among the choicest of the region, to achieve his lifelong goal of making Cos d’Estournel a first-tier estate and producing one of the world’s most outstanding wines.
Louis Gaspard d’Estournel would live to see his wine designated a Deuxième Grand Cru du Médoc by the negociants of Bordeaux but sadly enough, he passed away two years before the 1855 Bordeaux Classification officially recognized Cos d’Estournel as a Second Growth Estate.

Louis Gaspard d’Estournel was filled with curiosity about and openness to the world around him. His pursuit of new markets led him to Asia, where British officers stationed in India would begin savoring his wine as early as 1838.
This interest in overseas markets fueled a passion for faraway places that would serve as inspiration for the singular architecture of his estate, a sumptuous palace dedicated to wine, topped with monumental pagodas.
Louis Gaspard d’Estournel would remain an enigmatic and original figure amongst his peers. This, coupled with his obsession for the foreign and the exotic, would earn him the nickname of Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe

Owner of Cos d’Estournel since 2000, entrepreneur Michel Reybier is a simple and discreet man. Moved by the extraordinary personality of the estate and the audacity of its founder, his decision to acquire was clear: it would be “Cos and only Cos.”
Today he remains deeply attached to his vineyard. “At first glance, I was attracted by the history of the place. And then when I visited the estate, I felt instantly how unique, how exceptional it is.”
Michel Reybier is an active presence throughout the year and a major actor in the estate’s development. In this he resembles his predecessor Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, with whom he also shares a profound passion for Cos d’Estournel.

Under the direction of Michel Reybier, innovation and tradition find balance at Cos d’Estournel and the anti-conformist spirit of its founder lives on to this day. But being different is not an end in itself: the goal has always been to draw on the exceptional qualities of the vineyard to produce wines of unsurpassed quality.
It has proven a recurring theme, centuries ago under the ownership of Louis Gaspard d’Estournel and now under the direction of Michel Reybier. The two men are united not only in their common business interests and their pursuit of excellence at Cos d’Estournel: they also share the same love of beauty and understated luxury to which the singular charms of the estate may be attributed.

Today Michel Reybier continues to pursue his passion for the vine and explore opportunities beyond Bordeaux: in 2009, he acquired the Hétszolo Estate in Hungary and in 2013, created an exceptional cuvée in the Champagne region. Together his three vineyards make up Domaines Reybier.

The purity of fruit in this is fascinating with plums, currants and other dark fruits. Then there is another layer of spices and chocolate. So much cassis. Full and very layered with chewy polished tannins and a long, long finish. Just starting to open. Changes all the time.

A lesson in genuinely great wine, the 2005 Cos d’Estournel is a monster of a wine that delivers an incredible level of opulence and decadence while staying weightless and elegant on the palate, with no sensation of heaviness. This is what truly great wine is all about. Based on 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and the final 4% Cabernet Franc, this dense ruby/plum-hued Saint-Estèphe offers up a monster bouquet of blackcurrants, unsmoked tobacco, licorice, toasted bread, classy oak, and cedar pencil. While it starts out reserved and almost understated, this is a wine that blossoms with air (I drank this bottle over two days, showing best on day two). Full-bodied, powerful, and decadent on the palate, with moderate acidity, it has a wealth of silky tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and a great, great finish. It reminds me of the 2009, if not an improved 1982, or even a slightly fresher 2003. Regardless, it’s a thrilling wine in every sense, and I fear with the focus on acidity and freshness in today's wine world, we might not see this style of great wine for some time.

Black in color, with aromas of orange peel, new leather, currant, berry and Christmas pudding. Full-bodied, with layers of velvety tannins and a long, long finish of fruit and spices. The cashmere texture is all there. 2003 plus 2000 equals 2005.

The 2005 Cos d'Estournel is blended of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet colored, it is still a little closed and youthfully shy. With coaxing, the nose is just beginning to offer glimpses at vivacious kirsch, red roses, violets, licorice and mocha scents over a crème de cassis, blackberry pie and chocolate-covered cherry core with wafts of chargrill, mossy bark and truffles. Full-bodied, concentrated and wonderfully complex in the mouth, the palate is just beginning to reveal the true potential of this wine, with tightly wound layers of perfumed black fruits and earthy notions bound by a rock-solid frame of firm, grainy tannins and finishing with epic persistence. This still needs 5-6 years, but I love how this beauty is shaping up!!

Saint-Estèphe has a reputation for tannins, and this 2005 Cos lives up to that. But it does much more, because the tannins add richness along with intensely ripe black fruits, dark plums and figs. The dense tannins are finely balanced with fresh acidity, and a long-lasting aftertaste. Impressive.

This over-delivers and stands out in the line up. A stunning second wine at 15 years old, impressively textured with soft tannins that are still very much in play. Dense plum in colour, this offers layer after layer of black cherry, cassis, smoked earth, graphite and sweet tobacco. Michel Reybier was five years into his ownership at this point with Jean-Guillaume Prats director. They had tightened up selection for the first wine, benefitting the quality of the second as with Petit Mouton just round the corner, and it shows in the concentration and structure. 40% new oak. Drinking Window 2020 - 2035
