Chateau La Rode was established in 1963 and is located in the small town of Saint Philippe d’Aiguilhe, the Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux region. The winery occupies an area of 11 hectares and has experienced 3 generations of the family. Since 2012, the winery has implemented organic cultivation and has obtained relevant certifications📜. The grapes are all harvested from 35-year-old vines. After harvesting, the grapes will be macerated for 3-4 weeks to extract more fruity aroma and color. After fermentation in stainless steel barrels, they will be aged in cement barrels to soften tannins. And increase the roundness.

Côtes de Bordeaux Castillon is the appellation title for Côtes de Bordeaux wines made specifically in the Castillon district, at the very eastern edge of Bordeaux. Until 2009, these wines were sold as Côtes de Castillon.

All Côtes de Bordeaux Castillon wines are red, made predominantly from Merlot, which accounts for about 70 percent of the harvest. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are the main supporting grape varieties. Malbec, Petit Verdot and even Carmenère are also permitted.

Merlot is the main variety, producing relatively well-structured wines that are approachable at an early age. There is of course, variation in the exact blends of these Côtes de Bordeaux Castillon wines, depending on several factors. These include the target market and style of a wine, the existing varieties planted in the vineyards and their precise terroir.

Those sites with clay soils in the foothills of the plateau, for example, are better suited to Merlot. They have the potential to create softer, more supple wines for early consumption.

Those on gravelly soils near the Dordogne river will favor the Cabernet varieties. These are likely to create more-structured wines with higher tannin levels which can benefit from a few years in the cellar. On the plateau of St Émilion, soils are either principally limestone, or a mix of clay and limestone.
