Francois-Antoine POUGET inherited Château POUGET in 1748. His daughter Claire maried Pierre-Antoine de CHAVAILLES in 1771.
Over one and a half centuries, the POUGET de CHAVAILLES family was in charge of CHATEAU POUGET. They had sometimes to face difficulties, as when, during the French Revolution, their properties were requisitioned, but they also met with great success, as CHATEAU POUGET was classified as a fourth Cru Classé in 1855.
The château itself used to be a cellar, its front portion was turned into a house during the second half of the 19th century. Two marble medaillons on the frontage of the house commemorate the different classifications of CHATEAU POUGET.
It would be difficult to miss the imposing coat of arm on the label. There is no doubt, Antoine Pouget comes from the vineyard of the prestigious Château Pouget. Its name pays homage to the founder of the vineyard, François-Antoine Pouget, King counsellor during the reign of LouisXV. The Duke de Richelieu is at the origin of the coat of arms and motto of Château Pouget. «L’amour sur ton cœur étendra sa puissance. Ton verbesera clair comme le chant du Coq. A l’égal du Lion tu ne craindras le choc. Side cestuy nectar tu te remplis la panse.
Since 1906, the estate has been in the hands of the Guillemet family. Technical director Lucien Guillemet applies his vast experience into making sure the wine he produces expresses all the beauty of these gravel soils envied the world over. He manages Château Pouget with conviction, but also subtlety.
🏅James Suckling 91pts(Vintage 2014)
The smoky oak is a bit obvious, but this also has plenty of fruit and some real charm. The dry tannins are quite discreet, the savory finish quite long.
