Château Pape Clément, located in Pessac, at the gates of Bordeaux, owes its name to its most famous owner: Pape Clément V.

It was in 1305 that Bertrand de Got, under the name of Clement V, entered Avignon, the city he had chosen to install the papal court. The Pope managed his vineyard with all the care that made it special, but his pontifical charge no longer allowing him to carry out this task, he entrusted his vineyard to the archdiocese: a means for him to bequeath the vineyard to eternity , and to allow the vineyard of Pope Clement to cross the centuries to come.

During the long period during which the castle of Pope Clement was administered by the archdiocese, modernism and technical progress made it a pilot area, one of the peculiarities of which was always the early harvest.

During the Revolution, the Archbishop of Bordeaux was dispossessed of his property, and the vine that the Pope had bequeathed to him five hundred years ago fell into the public domain.

The owners succeeded each other and had to fight in turn against the various plagues that attacked French vineyards at the end of the 19th century: powdery mildew, downy mildew, then phylloxera.

On June 8, 1937, a violent hailstorm destroyed almost the entire vineyard of Château Pape Clément and it was in 1939 that it was bought by Paul Montagne, agricultural engineer, who became attached, at the end of the war , to restore the vineyard and the winery and restore them to the rank they deserved.

At the turn of the 1980s, Bernard Magrez, an entrepreneur passionate about wines, took the reins of the château and gave this grand cru Classé an unprecedented international aura.

Thanks to hard work, constant questioning, the alliance of tradition (especially with the use of bovine animal traction) and innovation (use of a drone to monitor the evolution of the vine) and a remarkable terroir, the Château Pape Clément, Grand Cru Classé of Graves continues each year to amaze wine lovers with extraordinary quality.

In 2009, an exceptional year, it was the consecration, Château Pape Clément reached the mythical score of 100 with the famous critic Robert Parker, forever writing a page in the history of great exceptional wines.

Very intriguing nose. Earth, iron, violets, leather and nuances of cinnamon and tobacco leaves. Soft, plush texture with lovely black cherry character. Fine grained tannins and plenty of freshness.

The 2016 Clémentin de Pape Clement has a medium to deep garnet-purple color with crushed blackberries, cedar chest and allspice on the nose and new leather, unsmoked cigars and cassis in the background. Medium-bodied and finely crafted, with a good core of delicate black fruits, it has a plush frame and a spicy finish.
