HISTORY
The history of Clos de l’Oratoire des Papes dates back to the 19th century, the year 1880 to be precise, when Edouard Amouroux was bequeathed by marriage a beautiful vine parcel situated within a Clos. The Clos des Oratoriens was born. It was named after the oratory located just beneath the parcel in question. Built in the 18th century, this small chapel was dedicated to Saint-Marc, patron saint of winemakers and protector of the vine against bad weather, and remains a popular destination for annual religious processions this day.
In 1926 his son Léonce Amouroux created the Maison Amouroux and decided to rename his wine ‘Clos de l’Oratoire des Papes’ in memory of the Popes who, in the 14th century, built their summer palace in the hills behind what is now the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
The Clos de l’Oratoire des Papes bottle label is one of the most iconic in the whole of the appellation and well known throughout the world.
SIGNATURE AN ICONIC BOTTLE LABEL
The birth of Clos de l’Oratoire des Papes was followed by the creation of this emblematic bottle label in 1926. Almost a century later it remains completely unchanged and has come to be an icon of the appellation.
This ‘handmade’ label was designed during the Art Deco artistic movement and has become a timeless and classic work of art.
The label features strong symbols such as the vault depicted here to symbolize the papal crown worn by the popes in the 14th century. This emblem is now omnipresent in the Priory vinification premises used for Clos de l’Oratoire des Papes. On the lefthand side of the label is an image of the oratory dedicated to Saint Marc which is still present physically in the vineyards surrounding the Priory. At the top of the label is another historical religious emblem in the form of the medal of Pope Benedictus XIII. And in order to keep the family history alive, the name of the late Léonce Amouroux still appears at the bottom of the label as requested by his family members.
It is now a signature in its own right and well known throughout the world by wine lovers and collectors alike.
CLOS DE L’ORATOIRE DES PAPES WHITE
A wine with a strong personality, exceptional freshness and a pleasant bitterness imparted by the limestone soils of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Vinification
Early manual harvesting in order to reinforce the expression of the terroir.
Pressing is carried out as whole clusters in a 30 hL closed cage pneumatic press with moderate settling lasting for 12 to 36 hours at cold temperatures (6°C). The juices are vinified in egg-shaped concrete vats to create gravitational movement (known as the ‘vortex phenomenon’) by ensuring that the lees remain suspended so as to increase aromatic potential. 80% of the blend is fermented in vats at between 15 and 18°C and then aged on its full lees and without malolactic fermentation. The remaining 20% of the blend is fermented in 300 L new oak barrels and stirred gently through until December time.
Ageing
Aged for around 6 months, up until springtime, on its fine lees in egg-shaped concrete vats (80%) and 300 L French oak barrels (20%).
Tasting notes
Intense yellow hue with delicate green glimmers.
The nose exudes intense notes of white and yellow stone fruits (pear, quince, peach) before evolving towards notes of acacia and remarkable finenesse. Discreet aromas of dried fruits are the sign of a sunny vintage.
The palate is as powerful as the vintage itself. The limestone helped to conserve the wine’s approachability and has imparted a beautiful salinity to the finish which contrasts with the richness of the attack. A pleasant hint of bitterness lingers on the end palate to bring a unique dimension to the tasting experience.

Juicy and fresh, with green and yellow apple and melon notes forming the core. Ends with an unadorned feel and a flicker of acacia. Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne and Bourboulenc.

Equal parts Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Clos de l'Oratoire des Papes Blanc is classically styled, matured in a mix of new barriques (20%) and concrete tanks (80%). It's medium to full-bodied, silky textured and nicely balanced, with mellow notes of melon, tangerine and lime zest all lingering on the finish.
